Hi
I got retention money of 2.5 lacs from my employer for 3 yrs out of which 20% (50000) was deducted as income tax. After 3 months I quit the job and had to return the whole 2.5 lacs. Is there any way to get those 50 thousand I paid as income tax back.
Most likely your employer would have deposited the TDS in the second month itself (as per the deadline applicable for tax payment). You will accordingly need to claim the tax refund through your next income tax return (due for filing in July 2018). Your previous employer will need to issue TDS certificate (Form 16) in this regard to you (by May 2018).
