I submitted application for closure of NSS account in Post Office on 4.4.24. Cheque for the closure amount was issued on 22.4.24. When I asked for reason for delay it was stated as due to technical issue at the end of post office. When I asked for interest for the intervening period, postal authorities replied that they are not liable to pay for technical issues. My NSS account was in a place named Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh. I want to file a case in district consumer court in Andhra Pradesh for interest and compensation for losing opportunity to invest the amount in alternative investments.
A technical error may be beyond the control of the post office; however, denying some interest to make good the loss of 18 days does not look proper. Generally savings interest @4% per annum is paid in such cases. Before moving to consumer commission, you may lodge online complaint using the following link of Indiapost on behalf of your brother https://www.indiapost.gov.in/VAS/Pages/ComplaintRegistration.aspx If there is no or unsatisfactory response within 15 days, you may lodge complaint on e-jagruti portal - https://e-jagriti.gov.in/ then scroll down and create and account. Thereafter a complaint can be filed online. In case of any practical difficulties your brother, by authorizing another trusted person, can file physical complaint in Kakinada District Consumer commission. No lawyers are required and no legal documentation is necessary. The help desk in the court will provide a check list which will guide to file complaint. A last word; the whole process is time consuming and perhaps lots of efforts may be required to be put. So, if the amount involved is negligible, you may rethink on this issue. Demanding any compensation considering some hypothetical investment made out of the proceeds of NSS may not sustain.
