WPI Inflation Rises to 9.87% in June as Food, Fuel Prices Keep Pressure on Producers
Moneylife Digital Team 14 July 2026
India's wholesale price inflation accelerated to 9.87% in June from 9.68% in May, driven by higher prices of food articles, petroleum products, chemicals and basic metals, according to provisional data released by the Union ministry of commerce and industry on Tuesday. The All-India wholesale price index (WPI), based on the new 2022-23 base year, stood at 110.2 in June compared with 109.9 in May.

The ministry said mineral oils (containing petroleum products), food articles, the manufacture of basic metals, and the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products were the key contributors to wholesale inflation during the month.

The latest data indicate that producer prices remained elevated, despite some moderation in fuel and power inflation, as food prices gathered pace and manufacturing costs stayed firm.

The WPI food index, which combines food articles and manufactured food products and carries a weight of 24.99%, rose 6.14% year-on-year (y-o-y) in June against 4.49% in May, signalling a sharp increase in food-related wholesale prices.

Among the major commodity groups, primary articles inflation increased to 7% from 4.99% in May. Within this category, food articles recorded an inflation of 5.49%, while non-food articles registered a steeper 11.07%.

Inflation in the fuel and power segment eased to 27.41% from 30.33% a month earlier, although it remained the highest among the three major groups. Prices of mineral oils surged 46.48% y-o-y, while crude petroleum and natural gas inflation stood at 34.75%.

Inflation in manufactured products remained unchanged at 7.48%, indicating continued cost pressures across industrial goods. The ministry noted that higher prices of chemicals and chemical products, as well as basic metals, significantly contributed to the manufacturing inflation trend.

According to market observers, the elevated wholesale inflation reflects the impact of the ongoing West Asia crisis, including disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of India's crude oil imports passes. The rise in global energy costs has also spilled over into food and other commodity prices.

The ministry revised the April 2026 wholesale inflation figure upwards to 8.36% from the provisional estimate of 8.26%, following a revision in the WPI index to 108.9 from 108.8.

The final estimate for April was compiled with a 97.5% weighted response rate, while the provisional estimate for June was based on an 82.6% weighted response rate, reflecting the share of reporting units covered at the time of compilation.

The June release also included data for the newly introduced producer price indices. The All India output producer price index (OPPI) for all commodities stood at 109.9 during the month, while the provisional trial input producer price index (IPPI) for the manufacturing sector was 107.1. The final IPPI for April was revised to 104.2 from the provisional estimate of 104.9.

The government introduced last month the revised WPI series with 2022-23 as the base year, replacing the earlier 2011-12 series, as part of a broader overhaul of India's producer price measurement framework. Alongside the revised WPI, it also launched new series for the OPPI, IPPI and service producer price index (SPPI) covering selected services.

The ministry said the next set of provisional estimates for the WPI, OPPI and trial IPPI for July 2026 will be released on 14 August 2026.
