Dr Grigori Perelman lives in poverty in a cockroach-infested St Petersburg flat. He has cracked the Poincare Conjecture, one of the most difficult puzzles in mathematics. But when the Clay Mathematics Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts came knocking with the $1-million prize it had offered anybody who could solve the conundrum, Dr Perelman refused to open the door, saying only: "I don't need anything.
