WhatsApp Message Sparks Security Alert in Mumbai: 14 Suspected Terrorists, 400kg RDX Alleged
Moneylife Digital Team 05 September 2025
Security in Mumbai has been stepped up after a disturbing threat message was received on the official WhatsApp number of the city’s traffic police, claiming that a large-scale terror attack was being plotted with human bombs and explosives. The timing of the threat has heightened concerns, coming just as the city prepares for Anant Chaturdashi, the concluding day of Ganesh festivities, when lakhs of devotees gather at immersion points and public spaces.

The message, received late on Thursday at the traffic police control room, warned that 14 terrorists had infiltrated the city carrying 400kg of RDX, allegedly planted in vehicles. It further claimed that 34 'human bombs' had been stationed across Mumbai and threatened that the metropolis would 'shake after the blasts'.

According to the police, the sender introduced himself as a member of a Pakistan-based extremist outfit named 'Lashkar-e-Jihadi' and issued a chilling claim that the planned assault could take 'up to one crore lives'.

The threat has triggered a coordinated response by multiple security agencies. The Mumbai police crime branch has launched a probe, while the anti-terrorism squad (ATS) and central intelligence units have been alerted. Cybercrime experts have also been tasked with tracing the origin of the WhatsApp message.

According to media reports, the threat is being treated with utmost seriousness, especially as it follows a string of recent hoax calls and threatening messages aimed at the Mumbai police. “We are investigating the source of the WhatsApp message and verifying its authenticity,” a senior officer was quoted as saying by Free Press Journal.

In response, Mumbai Police have intensified checks at sensitive spots, including major junctions, railway stations, bus depots, and immersion routes. Patrolling has been increased in crowded areas, and plainclothes officers have been deployed around pandals and procession sites.

Authorities have appealed to citizens not to panic but to remain vigilant. “We request people to stay calm and immediately report any suspicious activity,” a senior police official says.

The investigation is ongoing and agencies are yet to confirm whether the message was part of a deliberate attempt to spread fear or represents a credible threat.
