  • Nifty, Sensex may give up some gains - Weekly closing report
    We had mentioned in last week’s closing report that Nifty, Sensex were trending higher. The major indices closed with minor gains over previous Friday’s close.
     
    The trends of the major indices in the course of the week’s trading was:
     
     
    On Monday, the major indices opened high and traded sideways closing with minor gains. On the NSE, there were 1,184 advances, 640 declines and 332 unchanged.
     
    Ritesh Agarwal-led Oyo, valued at nearly $10 billion in the country, laid off thousands of employees in India and China.
     
    Walmart India asked 56 senior executives to leave as part of its corporate restructuring process, shrugging off reports about the second round of layoffs coming in April.
     
    The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved the demerger of consumer products business of Tata Chemicals, which will be merged with Tata Global Beverages (TGBL), the latter being renamed ‘Tata Consumer Products’.
     
    Former head of the audit committee of the Yes Bank board Uttam Prakash Agarwal has filed a complaint with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) seeking a probe into "the illegal gains made by a certain set of people" in giving misleading information to the markets and the people on potential investors, including Citax and Erwin Singh Braich.
     
    On Tuesday, the major indices ended with minor gains. On the NSE, there were 1,054 advances, 736 declines and 343 unchanged.
     
    Infosys has signed a 5-year deal with European automotive logistics firm Gefco to digitise its worldwide operation.
     
    For the quarter ended December 2019, Wipro’s consolidated net profit declined 2.17% year-on-year (YoY) to Rs.2,455.9 crore. Revenue stood at Rs.15,470.5 crore, up 2.73 per cent YoY. Wipro also announced dividend of Re.1 per equity share of par value Rs.2 each.
     
    For the quarter ended December 2019, TV18 Broadcast reported a 39.60% rise in its consolidated net profit at Rs.205.16 crore. Consolidated revenue stood at Rs1,425.37 crore, as against Rs.1,474.70 crore in the quarter ended December 2018.
     
    On Wednesday, the major indices opened low and closed with minor losses. On the NSE, there were 1,095 advances, 684 declines and 355 unchanged.
     
    IndusInd Bank’s stock price fell more than 5% after the lender reported sharp increase in gross slippages due to one travel account. Slippages increased significantly to Rs.1,945 crore in Q3, from Rs.1,102 crore in Q2FY20.
     
    To meet the AGR dues of Rs.35,500 crore by January 23, Bharti Airtel came closer to arrange the funds as it announced allotment of Rs.32.35 crore equity shares to eligible buyers at an issue price of Rs.445 apiece as part of $2 billion qualified institutional placement.
     
    Deepak Nitrite has acquired industrial land of around 125 acres situated at Industrial Phase, Dahej-2 in Gujarat for Rs.99.25 crores. The land will be utilized for future growth and expansion plans.
     
    Future Retail raised USD 500 million through fixed rate, senior, secured bonds of a 5-year (non-call 3-year) tenor at 5.600%. FRL's debut bond transaction also marks the first international bond deal from the retail & consumer sector space in India.
     
    On Thursday, the major indices opened high and closed with minor gains. On the NSE, there were 1,068 advances, 719 declines and 359 unchanged.
     
    Reliance Industrial Infrastructure reported a rise of 12.6% in its consolidated net profit for the third quarter of financial year 2019-20. However, the company's total income fell to Rs.24.42 crore from Rs.25.02 crore on a Y-o-Y basis.
     
    For the quarter ended December 2019, Tinplate Company of India reported 15.23% decline in revenues to Rs538.79 crore. Net profits rose 198.91% to Rs46.45 crore.
     
    Shares of Nestle India gained over 3% amid expectations of improving financial performance. The company will announce its December quarter results on February 13, 2020.
     
    On Friday, the major indices opened low and closed with minor losses, following the impact of Supreme Court ruling on telecom companies. On the NSE, there were 927 advances, 864 declines and 353 unchanged.
     
    The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed its first chargesheet in the money laundering case related to Bhushan Power and Steel Ltd (BPSL) on Friday in a Delhi Court.
     
    The Board of Directors of two public sector general insurance companies - Oriental Insurance Company Ltd. and United India Insurance Company Limited - are expected to give their nod for the merger at their respective meetings held in Delhi on Friday, said a Union leader.
     
    While Vodafone Idea crashed 34% after the Supreme Court's dismissal of the AGR review petitions filed by telcos on its earlier Adjusted Gross Revenues (AGR) verdict, Bharti Airtel jumped 4% and Reliance Industries gained nearly 2%.
     
    Bharti Infratel was the top loser on the NSE. Its stock price fell nearly 10% on the AGR verdict.
     
    For the quarter ended December 2019, HCL Technologies posted 15.53% rise in revenues to Rs18,292 crore. Net profits increased 13.01% to Rs2,944 crore. The board has declared an interim dividend of Rs.2/- per equity share.
