The death toll from the boiler explosion at Vedanta Ltd’s thermal power plant in Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district has risen to 14, with around 20 workers still undergoing treatment, several of them in critical condition, marking one of the most serious industrial accidents in recent years.

The incident occurred around 2.30pm on Tuesday at the company’s Athena power facility in Singhitarai village, when a boiler tube carrying high-pressure steam to a turbine exploded with immense force. The blast left workers with severe burn injuries, many of whom were engaged in maintenance and painting activities at the time.

According to officials, four workers died on the spot, while others succumbed to their injuries during treatment at nearby hospitals. In total, around 30 workers were affected in the explosion, with rescue teams continuing efforts amid fears that some individuals may still be trapped at the site.

In a regulatory filing, Vedanta confirmed that the incident took place at the unit-1 boiler of its Athena power plant on 14 April 2026.

The company stated that the accident involved personnel from its subcontractor NGSL which handles operations and maintenance at the facility.

“As of now, 24 workmen of our subcontractor have been affected by the incident and 10 have succumbed to their injuries,” the company says in its filing, adding that its immediate priority is to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured.

Vedanta further says it is extending full support to those affected and is coordinating closely with medical teams and local authorities.

“The Company is in the process of ascertaining the details and has initiated a detailed investigation into the incident in coordination with its sub-contractor and the relevant authorities,” the filing noted.

Police and district administration officials say rescue operations were launched immediately after the explosion, with emergency teams rushing to the site.

Injured workers were shifted to nearby hospitals, where several remain in critical condition. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of more casualties, as search operations continue in parts of the plant.

Preliminary findings indicate that the blast originated in a boiler tube, though a comprehensive technical investigation is yet to establish the exact cause.

In a separate statement, a Vedanta spokesperson says the company is focused on providing medical assistance and support to victims and their families.

“Our immediate priority is to ensure the best possible medical assistance for those affected. We are extending full support to the injured and are closely coordinating with medical teams and local authorities,” the spokesperson says.

Reacting to the tragedy, prime minister (PM) Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

In a statement posted by the prime minister’s office (PMO), he announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased, and ₹50,000 for those injured.

“The mishap at a power plant in Sakti district, Chhattisgarh, is tragic. I extend my condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest,” the statement from PMO says.

The scale of the explosion and the number of casualties have raised serious concerns about industrial safety protocols at large-scale thermal power plants.

With multiple agencies expected to probe the incident, including technical experts, the focus is likely to remain on compliance with safety standards, maintenance procedures and subcontractor oversight.
