US Student Visa: Trump Halts New Appointments
Moneylife Digital Team 28 May 2025
The administration of US president Donald Trump has directed American diplomatic missions overseas to halt the scheduling of new appointments for student and exchange visitor visas. This development comes as the US state department plans to expand its screening of applicants’ social media profiles.

Secretary of state Marco Rubio stated that updated guidance regarding the new vetting procedures will be issued following the completion of a review. Appointments that have already been scheduled will continue as planned.

This decision is part of the Trump administration’s broader strategy to tighten immigration measures, which includes increasing deportations and placing greater scrutiny on student visas.

The expanded vetting process is expected to alter the functioning of consular sections, emphasizing the additional resources required to assess each case. Furthermore, the administration has linked expressions of support for Palestinians or criticism of Israel by student visa-holders to potential deportation, alleging such actions could undermine US foreign policy.
