TransUnion CIBIL, CRIF High Mark, Equifax Penalised ₹34.90 Lakh for Delayed Compensation
Moneylife Digital Team 07 September 2026
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a combined penalty of ₹34.90 lakh on three credit information companies (CICs): TransUnion CIBIL Ltd, CRIF High Mark Credit Information Services Pvt Ltd and Equifax Credit Information Services Pvt Ltd for failing to credit compensation to eligible complainants within the prescribed timeframe.

TransUnion CIBIL has been penalised ₹26.82 lakh, the highest among the three (CICs). The penalty relates to non-compliance with RBI framework governing compensation to customers in cases involving delays in the updation or rectification of credit information.

According to RBI, TransUnion CIBIL failed to credit the prescribed compensation into the bank accounts of certain eligible complainants within the stipulated period.

CRIF High Mark Credit Information Services has been fined ₹6.89 lakh, while Equifax Credit Information Services has been penalised ₹1.19 lakh. RBI issued both orders on 31 August 2026, citing the same regulatory lapse, failure to credit compensation to eligible complainants within the prescribed timeline under the applicable framework.

The penalties follow RBI's scrutiny of compliance with its directions relating to compensation for delays in resolving complaints concerning credit information. The framework requires eligible complainants to receive compensation when credit information is not updated or rectified within the prescribed period.

RBI, however, clarified that the penalties are based on deficiencies in regulatory compliance and should not be construed as invalidating any transaction or agreement entered into by the entities with their customers.

The central bank's action underscores the importance of timely compliance by credit information companies, particularly when delays in correcting credit records can affect consumers' access to loans and other financial services.
