The “@” symbol was found on most typewriters, and it was probably the most underused key. But Ray Tomlinson, who helped create the world's very first email system, was faced with the problem that emails could only be sent to users on the same server. He adopted "@" to allow cross-server email routing, via an email address, elevating this key to the defining symbol of the computer age.
