Vedanta group chairman Anil Agarwal on Wednesday announced the death of his son, Agnivesh Agarwal, describing it as the 'darkest day' of his life and sharing a deeply personal tribute that spoke of a father’s unimaginable loss.

The 49-year-old Agnivesh Agarwal passed away in the US following a sudden cardiac arrest. He was undergoing treatment at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York after being injured in a skiing accident and was believed to be recovering well, according to his family.

“My beloved son, Agnivesh, left us far too soon. He was just 49 years old, healthy, full of life, and dreams. We believed the worst was behind us. But fate had other plans,” Mr Agarwal wrote in a post on X, confirming his son’s death.

Recalling his son’s life, Mr Agarwal says Agnivesh was born in Patna on 3 June 1976, and grew up in a middle-class Bihari family before carving out his own identity as a business leader. “From a middle-class Bihari family, he grew into a man of strength, compassion, and purpose. The light of his mother’s life, a protective brother, a loyal friend, and a gentle soul who touched everyone he met,” he wrote.

Agnivesh was a prominent figure within the Vedanta ecosystem and its associated ventures. He served as chairperson of Talwandi Sabo Power Ltd (TSPL), one of India’s largest private thermal power plants and earlier held the position of chairman of Hindustan Zinc Ltd. He also founded Fujairah Gold FZC in the UAE, establishing a significant international presence in the metals and resources sector.

Educated at Mayo College, Ajmer, Agnivesh was known for maintaining a low public profile, despite holding senior leadership roles. In his tribute, his father noted that beyond titles and achievements, his son remained 'simple, warm, and deeply human'.

“To me, he was not just my son. He was my friend. My pride. My world,” Mr Agarwal says, adding that he and his wife Kiran are 'broken' by the loss. He also reflected on the thousands of young people working across Vedanta, saying they, too, were like children to the family.

Tributes poured in from across the country, including from prime minister (PM) Narendra Modi, who expressed his condolences in a message on X. “The untimely passing of Shri Agnivesh Agarwal is deeply shocking and saddening. The depth of your grief is evident in this touching tribute. Praying that you and your family find continued strength and courage. Om Shanti,” the prime minister says.

Agnivesh Agarwal is survived by his parents and his sister Priya Agarwal who is on the board of Vedanta Ltd and serves as chairperson of Hindustan Zinc.

“There was so much life ahead of him. So many dreams yet to be lived,” Anil Agarwal wrote, ending his tribute with a message to his son: “Beta, you will live on in our hearts, in our work, and in every life you touched. I do not know how to walk this path without you, but I will try carrying your light forward.”

So very sad and shocking! May his soul rest in peace and God give enough strength to his parents to bear this huge loss. We're all helpless against the will of the Almighty. I had also lost my highly promising only son Saurabh Agrawal, 21, on February 22, 1994 while he was studying at IIT, Delhi. Time passes but the wound remains persistently painful.
