TCS Nashik Scandal: 7 Arrested, All Accused Employees Suspended amid Sexual Harassment and Religious Coercion Allegations
Moneylife Digital Team 13 April 2026
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) finds itself at the centre of a grave workplace misconduct controversy after eight women employees at its Nashik facility in Maharashtra came forward with allegations of sustained sexual harassment, mental abuse and attempted religious coercion spanning roughly four years, from early-2022 to March 2026. The company has since suspended all employees named in the complaints, pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.

The matter first came to light when a woman employee accused a male colleague of pursuing a romantic relationship with her under a false promise of marriage. As the Nashik police began investigating her complaint, seven other women stepped forward with similar accounts, painting a picture of systemic workplace misconduct. A male employee also separately alleged that he was pressured into religious practices against his will.

The allegations put forth by the women are wide-ranging and deeply troubling. They include physical molestation, unsolicited and inappropriate physical contact, demeaning remarks about their bodies and personal lives, stalking, and coercion into eating non-vegetarian food. Critically, the victims also claimed that multiple complaints raised with their seniors and the internal human resources department were either ignored or actively suppressed.

Nashik police responded swiftly and decisively. In a notable undercover operation, seven women police officers entered the TCS Nashik office in plain clothes, and one of the accused was caught in the act of misbehaving with female employees. Following this and further investigation, seven people, several team leaders and senior staff, as well as an assistant general manager for human resources (HR), were arrested. However, the company’s senior HR official Nida Khan, is reportedly absconding. The other named accused are: Asif Ansari, Shafi Sheikh, Shah Rukh Qureshi, Raza Memon, Tausif Attar, and Danish Sheikh.

A court remanded the HR manager to police custody until 13 April 2026, while the remaining six accused were sent to 14-day judicial custody. A female co-accused, named in connection with the assault and religious sentiment cases, remains at large, with police employing technical surveillance to track her down.

A special investigation team (SIT), headed by assistant commissioner of police (crime) Sandeep Mitke, was constituted to oversee the probe. So far, nine first information reports (FIRs) have been registered since 26 March 2026, covering charges of sexual harassment, breach of promise to marry, and offences related to hurting religious sentiments. Investigators are currently reviewing over 40 CCTV footage clips as part of evidence gathering, and more arrests are expected.

A particularly alarming dimension of the case involves alleged attempts at religious conversion and coercion. Victims stated that they were pressured to participate in religious practices alien to their faith, and Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan alleged that some victims were compelled to offer namaz and consume beef. Investigators also found that the accused had reportedly created internal WhatsApp groups where targets were discussed and strategies to convert or exploit vulnerable Hindu women were allegedly coordinated.

Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis publicly condemned the conduct, calling it shocking, and praised law enforcement for uncovering it.

Facing mounting public pressure and political scrutiny, TCS issued an official statement affirming its commitment to employee safety. The company stated that it maintains a long-standing policy of zero tolerance toward all forms of harassment and coercion, and that it took swift action upon being made aware of the situation. All employees currently under investigation have been suspended pending the conclusion of the inquiry and the company reiterated that it is fully cooperating with law enforcement.

TCS also addressed speculation about a potential closure or relocation of its Nashik office, though no decision has been confirmed. Police, for their part, clarified that there is no ground from their side to seal or shut down the facility, and that any such decisions would be an internal matter for the company.

Nashik district collector Ayush Prasad has ordered a separate inquiry into TCS Nashik's compliance with the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) Act. The district-level committee will examine whether a functioning internal complaints committee existed at the company and whether it met its legal obligations. The assistant public prosecutor in the case noted that timely intervention by the HR official could potentially have prevented the escalation of the crimes.

The case also drew national attention beyond Maharashtra. Union minister of state for home Bandi Sanjay Kumar, noting the implications for Hyderabad's large IT workforce, urged the Telangana director general of police to convene an urgent meeting with major IT companies to reinforce accountability and ensure that no complaint goes unaddressed.

The Nashik TCS case has ignited a broader national conversation about safety in India's corporate IT sector, particularly for young and junior employees. It raises serious questions about the effectiveness of internal grievance mechanisms, management accountability, and the vulnerability of workers in large, high-pressure work environments.

As of now, the SIT continues its investigation and no chargesheet has been filed. Police have urged any additional victims to come forward through a dedicated helpline. The outcome of this case is expected to have significant implications for how workplace harassment laws are implemented and enforced across India's technology industry.

The leadership, now saying that they are fully cooperating with investigation and would take strict action against involved; does not absolve them of not being able to put adequate oversight processes and structures in place to know how grave criminal activities were going on for so long. I have had firsthand experience of how intimidated and helpless employees may feel in a company when a signal of indifference is sent down the line from top leadership. The typical arrogant HR then gets even more arrogant and indifferent.

The employees or victims could have send an email to their head officer, CC to chairman and CEO. I am sure their emails are available in public domain. One email to somebody higher in HR dept itself could have nipped the problem.

This is shocking.
Could the perpetrators be so unaware of the prevailing atmosphere to act so brazenly?
Something smells phony!
