Something Is Not NEET. 6 Toppers without a Surname Out of 67 Are from Same Centre in Haryana
Moneylife Digital Team 06 June 2024
The results of this year's national eligibility-cum-entrance test (NEET) announced by the National Testing Agency (NTA) are full of surprises, including the total number of students who have scored perfect 720 marks, compared with less than five students hitting the mark over the years. Not just a very high number of toppers, the NEET result also shows six toppers without a surname who scored perfect marks by appearing for the examination from the same centre in Haryana, as per their roll number.

According to NTA, the 67 top rankers include 14 women students, and most of these toppers are from Rajasthan. It says 56.4% of the students have qualified for the exam conducted on 5 May 2024 at centres across the country and abroad. Over 2.4mn (million) students from 557 cities across India and 14 overseas locations appeared for this year's NEET exam.

Dr Vishal Mishra, a director at a pharma company, pointed out several issues with this year's NEET examination and the result declarations. He says, "For every correct mark, students get four marks, and for every wrong question attempted, they get five negative marks. However, as per the NEET results, two students get 719 and 718 marks. This is not possible at all out of 720, considering the mark system. Furthermore, NTA mentioned that they had given grace marks. Nowhere is it mentioned what the formula of grace marks is and why it was considered for the toppers. How many marks were given as grace, and how many students got it is not disclosed?"

In a clarification on Wednesday, NTA says that due to the grace marks and normalisation process, some students received 718 or 719 marks. It says it received a few representations and court cases from students of NEET raising concerns of loss of time during the examination on 5 May 2024.

"Such cases or representation were considered by NTA and the normalisation formula, which has been devised and adopted by the Supreme Court, vide its judgement on 13 June 2018, was implemented to address the loss of time faced by the candidates of NEET. The loss of examination time was ascertained and such candidates were compensated with grace marks. So, the candidate's marks can be 718 or 719 also," NTA says.

However, many people doubt that given the marking system adopted by NTA under which after the top score of 720, the next possible score would be 716 or 715 and not 718 or 719.

According to the official information bulletin of NTA the NEET results were scheduled to be  released on 14 June 2024.

However, Dr Mishra points out the NEET results were declared on 4th June, the same day, when counting of votes and results were declared for the 2024 general election. He alleges that "In the history of NTA, it has never happened, why the 4th June was selected when entire news channels were busy reporting the election result- because NTA did not want the news channels to concentrate on the result and scam under this year's exam.".

"Due to this irregularity in marks and the result, the rank versus score is highly disturbed. Students who should have got good ranks are far behind. So it is not only the toppers but many many students who got very high scores, which never happened in history. I am sure this is due to a paper leak this year," Dr Mishra says.

In a release, NTA says there was one incident at a centre in Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan, where some students forcibly took away question papers before the conclusion of the examination. "A picture of the question paper is being linked to alleged incident of paper leak, which is mischievous and proposterous. There is no way any external person or agency can access the centres once the examiniation stared."

In a report, India Today, says the Bihar police have arrested 13 individuals, including four examinees and their relatives, in connection with the alleged leak of the NEET-UG question paper held on 5 May 2024. The investigation into the 'paper leak' had been transferred to the economic offences unit (EOU) of the Bihar police.

Haryana has already cracked the entire system of examination. Whether it be NEET, SSC or government exams. All over India, there are undeserving candidates are being selected through unfair means. Central government should seriously impose strict penalty to curb this. It's a grave issue where talented people are left behind and ppl from haryana are being selected through unscrupulous means
