SEBI Revamps Document Verification System, Makes ‘Subject Matter’ Mandatory for Letter Authentication
Moneylife Digital Team 02 October 2026
Market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has revamped its document number verification system (DNVS) by making the subject matter of a letter a mandatory field for verifying physical letters, notices and show-cause notices issued by the regulator.

SEBI had launched the DNVS in April 2025 to help recipients authenticate physical communications purportedly issued by the regulator.

According to SEBI's latest circular, the system has been modified to strengthen the credibility of the authentication process. It has also been aligned with the outward number format generated by SEBI's e-office system's outward module.

Under the revamped system, recipients of SEBI communications, or persons authorised to act on their behalf, can verify whether a letter or notice was actually issued by the regulator.

For verification, users must validate their credentials and provide the details specified in the communication. These include the outward number, name of the SEBI official who issued the letter, date of the letter, subject matter and name of the recipient.

SEBI said the addition of the subject matter as a mandatory field would strengthen the authentication process and help verify whether a particular communication was issued by the regulator.

However, SEBI has clarified that verification through the system does not constitute verification of the letter's contents.

If the details entered by the user match SEBI's records, the system will confirm that the regulator issued a communication containing those details. In case of a mismatch, the system will display a ‘no record is found’ message and advice the user to either re-enter the correct details or seek confirmation from SEBI by emailing [email protected].

SEBI said the revamped system became operational in September 2026. Communications issued before the revamped system was operational can be verified by sending the relevant details to [email protected].

The DNVS remains available on the SEBI website under ‘authenticate document number issued by SEBI’. SEBI has also provided a detailed guidance note on the same webpage explaining how to use the system.
