SEBI Launches Document Number Verification System To Safeguard Recipients
Moneylife Digital Team 03 April 2025
Market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has launched a document number verification system (SEBI-DNVS) to promote transparency and ensure the authenticity of documents issued by the market regulator. This initiative addresses the growing need for verifiable communication, especially in the digital age, where documents are frequently transmitted online.

As digital communication becomes more prevalent, confirming the authenticity of documents, particularly those sent electronically, has become increasingly important, SEBI says.

Under the procedure contemplated under the DNVS system, any physical communication such as letters, notices, show-cause notices (SCNs) and summons issued by SEBI will bear an outward number that is unique for every communication. Here is an example of an outward number issued by the market regulator ‘SEBI/HO/LAD1/LAD1_DoP1/P/OW/2025/xxxxxxxx37’.

"The process envisages user verification through authentication of the one-time password (OTP) generated on the mobile number of the recipient(s) or any other person acting on their behalf who may then enter the outward number as well as other credentials such as sender's name, date of the communication and the name of the recipient to verify the issuance of such communication by SEBI," the market regulator says.

The recipient of any communication from the market regulator can visit SEBI's website and access the document authentication page. The page is accessible from the Home page in the path - SEBI website (www.sebi.gov.in )>Home>Authenticate Document Number Issued by SEBI.

The verification process, however, does not include the verification of the contents of the communication, it clarified.
