Moneylife Digital Team 19 December 2024
Market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) decided to extend the suspension of derivatives trading in seven agricultural commodities, including wheat and moong, till January 2025 to rein in prices.

In its directions to stock exchanges, SEBI says, "...the suspension of trading in the (derivative) contracts has been extended till 31 January 2025."

Commodities suspended for trading in derivative contracts are paddy (non-basmati), wheat, chana, mustard seeds and its derivatives (its complex), soya bean and its derivatives (its complex), crude palm oil and moong.

In December 2021, the market regulator banned new contracts in commodity derivatives segments for these seven commodities. (Read: Commodity Derivatives: No New Contract Should Be Launched for 7 Commodities, Says SEBI) The suspension was first set to last until 20 December 2022, but was subsequently extended twice—first for an additional year, until 20 December 2023 and then again until 20 December 2024.
