Provide free treatment to poor: SC to private hospitals
The Supreme Court on Monday said all private hospitals in the national capital, which were given land on concessional rate, must provide free treatment to certain percentage of poor patients.

Providing treatment to the poor was one of the clauses in the lease deed due to which land was given to hospitals at a very cheap price.

It is mandatory for private hospitals, built on land allocated by the government on concessional rates, to provide 10 per cent treatment to In Patient Department (IPD) and 25 per cent to Out Patient Department (OPD) for free.

A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra said any resistance by the hospitals would lead to cancellation of the lease and sought periodical report on compliance of its order from the Delhi government.

The bench said it will monitor functioning of private hospitals to ensure that the poor patients are treated free of cost.

why do we make such messed up laws in the first place. We have this penchant for liking everything free... time to question why should it be free... both the land and the treatment? Its simply encourages malpractices... why not charge market price for the land and then use that money to buy insurance for those who are really needy as per govt records? Is it a pvt hospital's job to determine who is "poor" or "needy".. time we scrap this socialist mentality and find capitalist ways of achieving the same objective...

Thank God for the courts, there is some hope of laws being applied. The poor who generally have to fight for space in the scarce public hospitals will have at least an alternative for treatment.

Proper medical attention is a necessity for all Indians all over India. Provision for it is the basic duty of government. It is possible if the government would be so inclined.

It is but natural that this should be done since the hospitals have been given land at very cheap rates.
