Packaged Drinking Water Reclassified as High-risk, FSSAI Mandates Stricter Checks
Moneylife Digital Team 03 December 2024
Amid rising health concerns, the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has reclassified packaged drinking water and mineral water as a high-risk food category, mandating stricter regulatory controls and annual facility inspections.

The move, effective immediately following an order issued on 29 November 2024, requires manufacturers to undergo mandatory third-party food safety audits and comply with enhanced quality standards.

"It is reiterated that all centrally licensed manufacturers under high-risk food categories shall get its business audited by FSSAI recognised third-party food safety auditing agency every year. The list of high-risk food categories now also includes packaged drinking water and mineral water," FSSAI says in an order.

Aimed at mitigating potential health risks associated with the production of packaged water, the order mandates that Central licence-holders in this category now submit to annual inspections.

Manufacturers must undergo third-party audits to ensure compliance with enhanced quality standards, FSSAI says in the order.
