None of Their business

Industry associations in India are lobbying organisations narrowly focused on issues that matter only to their members. This unwritten rule is something that the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) seems not to know.

Or, maybe the new organisation is only excited about its newly acquired media status and attention. If it is the latter, then CAIT may want to reflect on it.  On 1st March, CAIT issued the strangest press release demanding that Ms Smriti Irani, minister of information and broadcasting, should ‘intervene’ for a ‘self-imposed code of conduct for the media’, because of the reporting on the death of actress Sridevi was ‘too excess’ (sic).

The reason for CAIT’s garbled release, which was confused between self-imposed and government-ordered code of conduct, was even more amusing.  It claims to be responding to the “mental torture and irritation among the people at large” caused by the media coverage.

While the voyeuristic and prurient coverage, indeed, saw the electronic and digital media hitting a new low, CAIT’s over-the-top press release probably offered comic relief. But it added nothing to CAIT’s credibility which should be a bigger concern for the Association today.
