New York Ends Food Vouchers for Illegal Immigrants after Trump's Victory: Report

New York City has announced that it will no longer issue vouchers to migrants to pay for food, ending a controversial programme that had repeatedly come under attack by conservatives and others, says a report from ABC. This move comes following a victory of Donald Trump in the presidential election.

"As we move towards more competitive contracting for asylum seeker programs, we have chosen not to renew the emergency contract for this pilot programme once the one-year term concludes," Mayor Eric Adams's Office said in a statement.

The move has prompted debate as critics predict changing attitudes among migrant communities now that financial support has ceased.

The pilot programme distributed debit cards to migrant families staying in city-funded hotels, allowing them to buy their own food.

According to the report, while some characterised the program as an additional expense, it was initially conceived to save money by no longer buying food the asylum-seekers did not want to eat. "The city estimates it cost half as much as the boxed-meal delivery service it replaced."

"Since late March, the city has provided prepaid debit cards totalling US$3.2mn (million) to some 2,600 migrant families living in hotels so that they can buy food and baby supplies," ABC says.
