Live Trading Tips on Social Media: SEBI Warns Investors To Deal Only with Registered Intermediaries
Moneylife Digital Team 18 August 2026
Market regulator  Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has cautioned investors against persons offering ‘live trading strategies’ or ‘real-time strategies’ on social media platforms, warning that such sessions may involve unregistered investment advisory services and could influence investors to take trading positions based on live market data.

SEBI said its 8 May 2026 circular permits market price data to be shared for investor education and awareness activities only with a 30-day lag and without offering any monetary incentive to participants. Persons engaged solely in investor education should also not use market price data from the preceding 30 days, indicate future prices, or provide advice or recommendations on securities.

The regulator clarified that live market data cannot be shared by any entity, except where it is required for the orderly functioning of the securities market or for fulfilling regulatory requirements. However, SEBI has noticed certain individuals on social media offering live or real-time trading strategies and tips to viewers on taking positions in the stock market.

According to SEBI, these live trading sessions are attracting a substantial number of viewers, with live chats also being enabled alongside the sessions. The regulator observed that unregistered advisory services are being exchanged through such chats, raising concerns over investors receiving trading advice from persons who may not be authorised to provide such services.

SEBI said some of these individuals portray themselves as securities market experts and provide detailed guidance on when to enter or exit trades, strategies to follow and positions to take on market indices. Some also claim to trade in real time while displaying their trading performance, market patterns based on live data and the targets they expect to be achieved.

The regulator has advised investors not to trust such claims or make investment decisions based on live trading sessions. Instead, investors should deal only with SEBI-registered intermediaries when seeking investment-related services.

SEBI has urged investors to remain vigilant while carrying out transactions in the securities market and has issued the press release specifically to caution them about live and real-time trading strategies being offered through social media platforms.
