The central bureau of investigation (CBI) has arrested the managing director (MD) of Karnataka Antibiotics and Pharmaceuticals Ltd (KAPL), a Central public sector enterprise (CPSE), after allegedly catching him accepting a bribe of ₹5 lakh in Noida as part of a greater demand of around ₹15 lakh. While the agency did not reveal the MD's name, according to the company website, Anurag Danayak is the incumbent MD of KAPL

The arrest was made on 15 July 2026 following a trap laid by the anti-corruption agency in connection with allegations that the senior PSU (public sector undertaking) official had sought illegal gratification from a Bhopal-based company that serves as an authorised service agent of KAPL, the agency said in a release.

According to CBI, the firm is engaged in supplying medicines to government institutions in Madhya Pradesh. The agency alleged that Mr Danayak demanded around ₹15 lakh to approve the renewal of the company's service agent agreement and process its application seeking allocation of additional government institutions during the current financial year.

The investigation further alleged that the MD also sought a share of the commission earned by the company from the sale of medicines during the ongoing financial year.

CBI said its officers caught the accused red-handed while he was allegedly accepting ₹5 lakh as the first instalment of the demanded bribe in Noida.

Following the arrest, the agency carried out searches at the MD's residential and official premises in Bengaluru, Noida and Jabalpur.

According to CBI, the searches led to the recovery of around ₹75 lakh in cash and foreign currency valued at about ₹4 lakh from his residence in Noida and his office chamber in Bengaluru.

The agency also seized about 697gm of gold jewellery and gold coins, estimated to be worth around ₹86 lakh, along with documents relating to a residential flat owned by the MD.

Karnataka Antibiotics and Pharmaceuticals, a CPSE, is engaged in the manufacture and supply of pharmaceutical products, including medicines supplied to government healthcare institutions.

CBI said further investigation into the case is underway to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged demand and acceptance of the bribe, as well as the assets recovered during the searches.
