Joe Biden Out of Race, Proposes Kamala Harris as Nominee for Presidential Election
Moneylife Digital Team 22 July 2024
United States (US) president Joe Biden decided to withdraw from the race to be the next president, following mounting pressure from Democrats after a faltering debate performance against Republican candidate Donald Trump last month. Mr Biden has endorsed 59-year-old Kamala Harris, the incumbent vice president, as the new nominee for Democratic against Mr Trump.

Though Mr Biden's endorsement almost seals Ms Harris' position as her party's presidential nominee, she still needs to get elected by the party's delegates during the party's national convention in Chicago next month. Mr Biden has support from 3,896 delegates against 1,976 required to win the nomination.

In a post on X, US president Biden says, “I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as president for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”

Ms Harris, after being endorsed by Mr Biden, says she intends to 'earn and win' the party's nomination and do everything in her power to unite the nation to defeat Mr Trupm, her Republican rival. Ms Harris would be the first Black woman and first Asian American to lead the ticket of a major American political party.

While former US president Barack Obama and former speaker Nancy Pelosi praised president Biden for deciding to step aside from the presidential race, they stopped short of endorsing Ms Harris as the party nominee for the 5th November general elections.

Meanwhile, Mr Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, hit out at incumbent president  Biden for ending his re-election campaign. Mr Trump, a former US president, claimed that "everybody around Mr Biden, including his doctors, knew that he was not capable of running for or being president."
