ITR Filing Deadline 2025: I-T Dept Clarifies No Extension beyond 15th September
Moneylife Digital Team 15 September 2025
Dismissing social media posts claiming an extension till the end of the month, the income-tax (I-T) department has clarified that the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITRs) for assessment year (AY)25–26 remains 15th September.

In a late-night post on X, the department labelled as 'fake' a statement circulating online that suggested the last date for filing ITRs had been pushed to 30th September. “The due date for filing ITRs (originally due on 31 July 2025, and extended to 15 September 2025) has not been extended further. The due date remains 15 September 2025. Taxpayers are advised to rely only on official @IncomeTaxIndia updates,” it says.

To help taxpayers complete their filings, the tax department noted that its help desk is operating around the clock, providing assistance through calls, live chat, WebEx sessions and support on Twitter/X.

In May this year, the government extended the deadline for non-audit cases, including individuals and Hindu undivided families (HUFs), from 31st July to 15 September 2025. This was intended to provide more time for taxpayers in the face of rising compliance needs and new filing utilities.

So far, more than 60mn (million)  ITRs have already been filed for AY25–26. The I-T department, in a separate update, thanked both taxpayers and professionals for contributing to this milestone. “Thank you, taxpayers and tax professionals, for helping us reach the milestone of 6 crore ITRs as of now and still counting,” it posted on X.

Encouraging those who are yet to file, the department urged quick compliance to avoid a last-minute rush. “We urge all those who haven't filed ITR for AY25–26 to file at the earliest to avoid a last-minute rush. Let's continue this momentum!” it says.

The steady growth in return filings underscores both an expanding tax base and higher compliance. Officials have pointed to the adoption of new online utilities this filing season as a factor in making the process smoother for many taxpayers.

With the 15th September deadline now confirmed, the I-T department has advised taxpayers not to be misled by unverified claims on social media and to rely solely on official communications.
