Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei Killed in US-Israel Airstrikes

Iranian state television has confirmed the death of supreme leader Ali Khamenei following joint US–Israel airstrikes, marking a dramatic escalation in the West Asia conflict and plunging the region into uncertainty.
 
According to Iranian state media, at least 201 people have been killed and more than 700 injured in the coordinated bombardment that targeted military and governmental sites across the country. Reports also suggest that around 40 senior Iranian officials were killed in the strikes. A 40-day state mourning period has been declared.
 
The confirmation came hours after US president Donald Trump announced on social media that Mr Khamenei had been killed, calling it the 'single greatest chance' for the Iranian people to reclaim control of their country.
 
“Khamenei, one of the most evil people in History, is dead,” Mr Trump wrote, adding that “heavy and pinpoint bombing” would continue through the week or longer.
 
Iran’s Fars News Agency reported that four relatives of Mr Khamenei, including his daughter, grandchild and son-in-law, were also killed in the strikes.
 
The Israeli military separately announced that several senior Iranian military commanders were killed in what it described as precise airstrikes conducted by the Israel Air Force after intelligence identified high-level security meetings in Tehran.
 
Among those Israel claimed were killed were defence minister Aziz Nasirzadeh and Mohammad Pakpour, identified as the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Israel also named Ali Shamkhani, a senior adviser to the supreme leader, among the dead.
 
Iran has not officially confirmed the deaths of the military commanders named by Israel.
 
Israeli prime minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu earlier said there were “many signs indicating Khamenei is no longer,” but stopped short of confirmation at the time. “Mr Khamenei’s compound was destroyed,” he says.
 
Leadership Uncertainty in Tehran
 
As of Sunday, there is no official clarity on who would assume the role of supreme leader of Iran or how the transition of authority would unfold. Iran maintains a structured hierarchy of civilian and military leadership, but the sudden death of its highest authority leaves significant political uncertainty.
 
President Trump claimed that several IRGC, military and security forces no longer wanted to fight and were seeking immunity. “Now they can have immunity, later they only get Death!” he wrote, warning that further operations would continue.
 
The full extent of damage within Iran remains unclear. Oresident Trump asserted that Iran had been 'very much destroyed and, even, obliterated' in a single day.
 
Iran Retaliates Across Middle East
 
Within hours of the US–Israel offensive, Iran launched waves of retaliatory drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and several Gulf countries.
 
 
Apparent Iranian strikes were reported in Dubai, Doha, Bahrain and Kuwait — locations that host US military bases or are allied to Washington.
 
In the UAE, authorities confirmed that a drone caused shrapnel to spark a fire at the iconic Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai. The fire was brought under control and no injuries were reported.
 
Several waves of Iranian attacks reportedly targeted the airport and other sites across the UAE, keeping residents awake overnight.
 
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it had also attacked a supply ship, according to Iranian news agencies.
 
Regional and Global Alarm
 
United Nations (UN) secretary-general Antonio Guterres says reports indicated that about 20 cities across Iran, including Tehran, Isfahan, Qom, Shahriar and Tabriz, had been attacked.
 
French president Emmanuel Macron warned that the escalation is dangerous and called for it to stop immediately.
 
India’s external affairs minister S Jaishankar spoke separately with Iranian foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar, expressing deep concern and reiterating India’s call for dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate tensions.
 
 
Aviation Disruptions and Fallout
 
The conflict has severely disrupted air traffic across West Asia. Flights to and from Gulf destinations were cancelled from several Indian airports, including Thiruvananthapuram, where 37 international departures to Gulf countries were scrapped since Saturday afternoon.
 
Passengers across multiple airports were advised to check flight statuses before travel, though many were left waiting amid uncertainty.
 
With Iranian missile strikes and US–Israel bombardment expanding the theatre of conflict, West Asia now faces one of its most volatile moments in decades. The death of Iran’s supreme leader marks a turning point whose political, military and economic consequences are likely to reverberate far beyond the region.
