Moneylife Digital Team 15 January 2025
Impeached South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol was detained on Wednesday, marking the first time a sitting president has been arrested in the nation's history. Mr Yoon is under investigation for a failed attempt to impose martial law.

His motorcade left his heavily guarded residence, which had been surrounded by barbed wire and personal security for weeks, and arrived at the anti-corruption agency conducting the probe.

Earlier, hundreds of police officers and investigators entered Mr Yoon's residence at dawn. Some scaled walls and took back trails to reach the main building. This was their second attempt to arrest the president.

Following his arrest, Mr Yoon can be detained for 48 hours under the current warrant. If further detention is required, investigators must secure another warrant.

Meanwhile, the constitutional court in South Korea is reviewing Mr Yoon's impeachment. The next hearing is scheduled for 16 January 2025 which will determine whether he is permanently removed from office.
