Immediately Stop Viksit Bharat Messages on WhatsApp, Election Commission Asks MeitY
Moneylife Digital Team 21 March 2024
Taking note of several complaints, the election commission of India (ECI) has directed the Union ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) to immediately stop sending 'Viksit Bharat' messages containing a letter from prime minister (PM) Narendra Modi on WhatsApp.

In a letter, Narendra Butolia, senior principal secretary of ECI says, "The Commission has received complaints from various quarters that such messages are still being delivered on citizen's phones. Since the model code of conduct (MCC) is not in force, you are hereby directed to ensure forthwith that no further delivery of WhatsApp messages takes place during the MCC period."

Mr Butolia also mentions a clarification received from MeitY, which mentions that "the WhatsApp messages were sent out on 15th March, before the MCC came into force. Though the letters were sent out before MCC period, but due to system architecture and network limitations, it is possible that some letters have delayed delivery."
