How RTI Can Help
A little effort, some perseverance and, often, just a Google search is all that it takes to resolve issues niggling issues that make our everyday lives hell. Whether it is a provident fund that hasn’t been credited or a tax refund that has gone into limbo, there are solutions that have resulted from someone or the other battling it out. All that is needed is to find out what to do.

So, on 17th November, a consultant tweeted seeking help on how to get the provident fund office to credit his money that was remitted by his previous employer. Typical of a government office, calls, emails, the help desk and the grievance system yielded no results. We suggested that he try filing a Right to Information (RTI) application.  On 27th November, the user who goes by the twitter handle  ‘ekselens (@charashpunjabi) had this to report:  “@rtiindia is amazing... my PF transfer was stuck for 100+ days with PF office not responding to repeated mails, phone call and letters. Raised an RTI application. Got transferred in 7 days flat. Thanks @suchetadalal for suggesting this way out.” Incidentally, as activist Rajesh Gada has pointed out at Moneylife Foundation seminars, this works well for tax-related queries too. In fact, the query leads to action. So don’t hesitate to use it.
