Fire at Pachpadra Refinery Forces Postponement of PM Modi’s Inauguration

The planned dedication of the refinery-cum-petrochemical complex at Pachpadra in Rajasthan’s Balotra district by prime minister Narendra Modi has been deferred following a fire incident near the crude distillation unit on Monday.

The inauguration, originally scheduled for 21 April 2026, has been postponed as a precautionary measure in the wake of the incident, underscoring the importance of safety checks before commissioning large industrial facilities.

Although the fire was quickly contained and no casualties have been reported, the episode has triggered an official probe and cast a shadow over the high-profile launch slated for the following day. Officials are assessing whether the incident could have any bearing on operational timelines.

In a statement posted on X, the ministry of petroleum and Natural Gas said that the fire had occurred in the vicinity of the crude distillation unit at the HRRL refinery. It confirmed that the blaze had been brought under control, with no injuries reported. The ministry added that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident and to implement necessary corrective measures, noting that a revised date for the dedication will be announced later.

The HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Ltd (HRRL) project is a Greenfield refinery-cum-petrochemical complex with a capacity of 9MMTPA (million metric tonnes per annum), including 2.4MMTPA of petrochemicals production.

Once operational, the refinery is expected to significantly enhance domestic fuel production and reduce import dependence, while also boosting downstream industries in the region.

The ₹79,459 crore project is a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) and the government of Rajasthan, with the state government holding a 26% equity stake. The project is also expected to generate substantial employment and spur economic development in western Rajasthan.
