Elon Musk, chief executive officer (CEO) of Tesla and SpaceX, acknowledged on 11 June 2025 that some of his social media posts targeting US President Donald Trump 'went too far,' suggesting a possible de-escalation in their highly publicised public clash.

Last week, in a dramatic and unexpected rupture of one of the most prominent relationships in recent US political and corporate history, Mr Musk called for president Trump’s impeachment while announcing the immediate decommissioning of SpaceX’s critical Dragon spacecraft.

The fallout, marked by personal attacks, policy disagreements and sensational allegations, caused turmoil in Washington and sent shockwaves through financial markets, wiping out over US$150bn (billion) in Tesla’s market value within hours.

The conflict peaked on 7 June 2025 when Mr Musk posted and later deleted a provocative message on his social media platform X, alleging that president Trump was named in the sealed Jeffrey Epstein files. “Time to drop the really big bomb… @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files,” Mr Musk claimed. “Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out.”

However, the tone shifted days later. Responding to a video clip in which president Trump appeared to extend an olive branch by stating he 'wished Musk well' and alluding to their formerly strong relationship, Mr Musk replied with a heart emoji  a gesture widely interpreted as conciliatory.

On 11 June 2025, Musk posted publicly: “I regret some of my posts about President Donald Trump last week. They went too far,” signalling a more measured stance after days of escalating rhetoric.

The once-amicable relationship between the two men, who had previously expressed mutual admiration, has grown increasingly strained in the lead-up to the 2024 US presidential election.

Whether this moment represents a genuine truce or a brief pause in hostilities remains to be seen. Still, Mr Musk rare public admission of misjudgement may mark a pivotal moment in their high-profile and volatile rivalry.
