The central bureau of investigation (CBI) arrested Sandeep Singh Yadav, an assistant director  (AD) of the enforcement directorate (ED), for allegedly taking a Rs20 lakh bribe from a Mumbai-based Vipul Thakkar, the owner of VS Gold.

On 3rd and 4 August 2024, ED conducted searches at the jeweller's premises. After the searches, Mr Yadav threatened to arrest the jeweller's son if he did not pay him Rs25 lakh. The amount was reduced to Rs20 lakh after negotiations.

Taking immediate cognisance of this incident and following the zero tolerance policy towards corruption, ED also initiated criminal action against the AD under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

ED registered an ECIR  (enforcement case information report) against him and conducted a search operation at his residence under the provisions of PMLA by ED to gather evidence of his criminal activities. CBI and ED jointly searched his office to collect evidence related to the offence. In addition to the PMLA case, action has also been initiated to place him under immediate suspension and for his repatriation to his parent department from ED, the agency says.

ED says it conducted a money laundering investigation against certain entities based on multiple first information reports (FIRs) registered in Delhi, Uttrakhand and Bangalore. The action was completed by 4 August 2024.

During the course of this action, Mr Yadav, the AD of ED acting as the 'search warrant authorised officer' searched the residential premises in Mumbai of an individual under investigation. The search was uneventful and conducted as per the due procedure.

"Sandeep Singh Yadav is not the investigating officer (IO) of this ECIR. He was requisitioned for the limited purpose of conducting the search at the target premises. However, he represented himself as an IO and allegedly accepted the bribe for favouring the accused though he was not connected with the case being investigated," ED says.
