ED Attaches ₹94.76 Crore in Singapore Bank Accounts in Amira Foods Money Laundering Case
Moneylife Digital Team 31 July 2026
The directorate of enforcement (ED) has provisionally attached bank balances worth US$10.03mn (million) or about ₹94.76 crore held in Singapore in connection with its money laundering investigation into Amira Pure Foods Pvt Ltd, a case linked to an alleged bank fraud of about ₹1,201.85 crore.

In a release, ED said its Gurugram zonal office had issued the provisional attachment order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, on 25 May 2026.

The attached funds are held in accounts maintained with the Bank of Singapore in the names of the main accused, Karan Chanana, Amira Foods Pte Ltd and Ananntya Pte Ltd.

According to the agency, the attachment order has been served on the concerned parties through the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) mechanism involving the UK and Singapore, as well as through other available channels.

The money laundering probe stems from a first information report (FIR) registered by central bureau of investigation (CBI), which alleged that Amira Pure Foods, along with its directors, promoters, employees and others, siphoned and diverted loan funds, leading to offences including criminal breach of trust, cheating, fraud and criminal misappropriation.

ED said the alleged fraud resulted in wrongful losses of about ₹1,201.85 crore to a consortium of banks led by Canara Bank. Amira Foods group was engaged in the manufacture and marketing of branded packaged food products, particularly Indian basmati rice.

The investigation found that the company had availed loans and cash credit facilities aggregating about ₹1,201.85 crore from the banking consortium. These loan accounts subsequently became non-performing assets (NPAs) in 2017.

The agency alleged that Amira Pure Foods and the company promoters, shareholders and directors were involved in laundering the proceeds of crime generated from the alleged bank fraud. It has already filed a prosecution complaint against 21 individuals, companies and other entities in the case.

ED said it had earlier identified properties believed to be proceeds of crime and, in March 2024, attached assets worth ₹131.51 crore. Those attachments were subsequently confirmed by the Adjudicating Authority under the PMLA.

With the latest attachment of overseas bank balances, the total value of assets attached in the case has increased to about ₹226.26 crore.

The agency also referred to proceedings initiated under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, 2018, stating that its investigation established that Karan A Chanana, chairman and managing director (CMD) of Amira Pure Foods, and Anita Daing, whole-time director of the company, had left India and are residing in the UK and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), respectively, while allegedly avoiding legal proceedings.

According to ED, non-bailable warrants were issued against both accused before it approached the Special Court under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act seeking to have them declared fugitive economic offenders.

On 6 February 2026, the Special Court (PMLA) at Rouse Avenue Courts, New Delhi, declared both Karan Chanana and Anita Daing as fugitive economic offenders. The Court also ordered the confiscation of 46 immovable properties valued at about ₹123 crore in Karnal and Faridabad.

Further investigation into the case is continuing, ED said.
