A court in Kalyan on Friday remanded four accused, including Shiv Sena corporator and the main accused Ramesh Mhatre, to police custody until 13 July 2026 in connection with the alleged assault on doctors and nurses at Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivli.
Mr Mhatre was produced before the Kalyan Sessions Court after being discharged from Thane Civil Hospital, where doctors certified him medically stable and fit to appear before the court.
Police had sought five days' custody for further investigation. After hearing both sides, the court granted police custody of the accused until 13 July 2026.
Speaking to reporters, Mr Mhatre's advocate MK Qazi alleged that the incident had been given a political dimension. He said the defence opposed the police's request for extended custody and also moved an application highlighting Mr Mhatre's medical condition.
According to the lawyer, the 73-year-old corporator is living with a single kidney and requires medical attention at regular intervals. The Court directed the police to ensure that he receives appropriate medical treatment if required during his custody.
Mr Mhatre was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the case registered at the Vishnunagar police station in Dombivli. Police have so far arrested four persons in connection with the incident.
On Thursday, the Kalyan court had rejected Mr Mhatre's request to appear through video conferencing, observing that his physical presence before the Court was necessary for the proceedings.
The case relates to an incident on 6 July 2026 at KDMC's Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivli, where doctors and nurses were allegedly assaulted, triggering widespread protests and condemnation from the medical fraternity across Maharashtra.
Following the incident, doctors' associations had demanded strict action against those responsible and enhanced security measures for healthcare workers.
Mr Mhatre has denied allegations that he assaulted women doctors or nurses during the incident. While expressing regret over the confrontation, he maintained that he did not strike any member of the medical staff.
Responding to CCTV footage that surfaced after the incident, Mr Mhatre claimed the visuals may have created a misleading impression due to the camera angle. He said he had merely tapped a woman doctor's hand after she continued speaking on the phone, rather than responding to the grievance he had brought to the hospital.
The corporator also attributed the confrontation to shortcomings in the hospital's functioning and said he had visited the facility after being informed of public complaints. He reiterated that he had never intentionally assaulted any woman and maintained that the matter had been misrepresented.
Police are continuing their investigation into the case.
