The Delhi government on Thursday announced that no adverse legal action will be taken against people who participated in protests over alleged irregularities in the national eligibility-cum-entrance test (undergraduate) (NEET-UG). The decision covers 13 cases registered by Delhi police and includes an expedited review of arrests and detentions already made, in compliance with a recent order of the Supreme Court.
In a release, the home department of the government of the national capital territory (NCT) of Delhi said that, as of 6pm on 29 July 2026, Delhi police had registered 13 first information reports (FIRs) in connection with protests relating to the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination.
The government said it had reviewed all aspects of the matter following the Supreme Court's order dated 28 July 2026 in Shailendra Mani Tripathi vs Union of India & Others and decided not to pursue further legal action against protesters, subject to certain conditions.
According to the decision, no adverse legal action will be taken by any police authority in Delhi against persons who participated in the protests. However, the protection will not extend to individuals with criminal antecedents, in accordance with the directions of the Supreme Court.
The government also announced that all arrests and detentions already made in connection with these cases will be reviewed expeditiously and the process of releasing those arrested will be undertaken without delay.
Further, the Delhi government said it does not propose to take any further adverse action against individuals involved in the protests and that the matter will be treated as closed, with no further proceedings on this account.
The home department said the decision had been taken after careful consideration of all aspects of the circumstances arising from the Supreme Court's order.
The release added that the decision had been issued with the approval of the lieutenant governor of the NCT of Delhi.
The announcement provides relief to those who participated in demonstrations over the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination, while making it clear that the benefit will not be available to persons with criminal antecedents, as stipulated by the Supreme Court.
On Tuesday, the apex court directed that no coercive action be taken against protestors involved in the recent student protests led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) in Delhi's Jantar Mantar and various other States.
A bench of chief justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, justice Joymalya Bagchi and justice V Mohana also ordered the immediate release of minors detained by police across different States.
However, the Court clarified that this protection shall not extend to those with a criminal background.
