Cost of Home-cooked Veg Thali Rises 7%, Non-veg Thali by 2% in November: CRISIL
Moneylife Digital Team 05 December 2024
In November, the average cost of a veg thali jumped 7% and non-veg thali increased by 2%, mainly due to an increase in the prices of tomato and potato, which collectively account for about 26% of the thali cost, says CRISIL Ratings.

According to Roti Rice Rate (RRR), CRISIL's monthly indicator of food plate cost, during November, the price of tomato increased 35% to Rs53 per kg from Rs40, while potato prices increased 50% to Rs37 from Rs25 in the same month last year. This is because of a 20% on-year decline in arrivals amid low yield following late blight infestation in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, it added.

While prices of pulses rose 10% due to lower opening and pipeline stocks, the prices are expected to dip once fresh arrivals begin in December.

Adding to the cost, vegetable oil prices rose 13% due to import duty hike and the festive and wedding season demand.

An 11% drop in fuel cost—from Rs903 last year for a 14.2kg LPG cylinder in Delhi to Rs803 currently—prevented further increase in the thali cost, the rating agency says.

For the non-veg thali, an estimated decline of 3% in broiler prices, which account for 50% of the non-veg thali cost, arrested the cost increase.

However, on a monthly basis, the cost of veg thali declined 2% in November, while that of non-veg thali remained flat. According to CRISIL, tomato prices declined 17% month-on-month (m-o-m) with fresh supplies from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat in October, but lower arrivals in November capped further decline.

"Rise in prices of vegetable oil, onion and potato by 4%, 4% and 1%, respectively, arrested further decline in thali cost. For the non-veg thali, an estimated 2% rise in broiler prices led to stable thali cost," it added.

The average cost of a thali is calculated based on input prices prevailing in north, south, east and west India. The monthly change reflects the impact on the common man's expenditure. The data also reveals that the ingredients like cereals, pulses, broiler, vegetables, spices, edible oil and cooking gas driving changes in the cost of a thali.

A veg thali comprises roti, vegetables (onion, tomato and potato), rice, dal, curd and salad. A non-veg thali has the same elements except for dal, which is replaced by chicken (broiler).
