Commonwealth Games: After ED's Closure Report, Congress Seeks Apologies from Modi and Kejriwal
Moneylife Digital Team 29 April 2025
Bringing down the curtain on a 13-year-old case, a Delhi court accepted a closure report submitted by directorate of enforcement (ED) in a money laundering case against Suresh Kalmadi, the former head of the organising committee of 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG) and then secretary general Lalit Bhanot and others.

With the court accepting ED's closure report in the CWG case, the Congress demanded that prime minister (PM) Narendra Modi and Aam Admi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal must apologise to it and the people of India for misleading the country.

In a post on X, Pawan Khera, chairman of the media & publicity department of the Congress party, says, "Truth does not shout from TV studios, it asserts itself quietly, powerfully, and inevitably. Will the PM apologise to the nation? Will Arvind Kejriwal apologise to the people of Delhi?"

"For years, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ecosystem weaponised lies to tarnish the Congress over the issues like 2G, CWG, Robert Vadra and coal. The truth stands tall, and their falsehoods lie in ruins. These cases were never about justice; they were about political persecution, headlines over substance and deflecting attention from their own failures. The collapse of these manufactured cases is not just a legal victory, it is a moral and political indictment of the BJP's politics of false narrative," he added.

The allegations of corruption in conducting the 2010 CWG had triggered a huge political uproar in the country, leading to filing of several criminal and money laundering cases, including the one in Delhi court.

According to Jairam Ramesh, general secretary in-charge of communications of Congress' before 2014, Mr Kejriwal and BJP had come together to 'fabricate scams' like 2G and CWG to defame his party.

In a post on X in Hindi, Mr Ramesh says, "Two very honest and dedicated leaders -- Dr Manmohan Singh and Mrs Sheila Dixit -- were falsely accused."

The acceptance of the closure report brings to an end the money laundering angle in the alleged scam which took place 15 years ago.

i presume after spending so many hours in making a case how come all of a sudden it is closed unless some kind of dealings have taken place which cannot be ruled out

why is this news on Moneylife ? Congress & its croonies continue to defame the PM for cases where Supreme court has given its decision so where is the question of an apology to Grand Old Party founded by Britishers

This is one of the reasons for mounting numbers of cases in Indian courts. And obviously it results in waste of court's time and resources. Unfortunately there is no provision of appropriate fines for the parties which file bogus cases.
