BMC Introduces Dedicated Helpline To Tow Away Abandoned Cars and Bikes
Moneylife Digital Team 04 August 2025
In an effort to ease congestion and improve traffic and pedestrian movement, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a dedicated helpline for reporting abandoned or scrapped vehicles across the city.

As part of an awareness campaign, the Mumbai police recently urged residents on social media to participate by reporting unused or junk vehicles left unattended on roads.

Helpline numbers by region
The BMC has set up three dedicated mobile numbers for different zones:

City division – 8828896903

Eastern suburbs – 7505123456

Western suburbs – 9819543092

Residents can also lodge complaints through the civic helpline 1916 or the official BMC website at mcgm.gov.in.

To implement the initiative, the civic body has appointed three contractors to identify, tow and dispose of such vehicles. Upon receiving a complaint, officials will issue a notice to the vehicle owner under Section 314 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) Act, 1888.

If the vehicle is not moved within 72 hours of the notice, it will be towed to the contractor’s yard. If unclaimed within 30 days, the vehicle will be disposed of and no further claims will be entertained.

Vehicle-owners whose vehicles have been towed are advised to pay the necessary fines within the 30-day period to avoid losing their vehicle permanently.

The BMC aims to speed up the removal of abandoned vehicles, which obstruct traffic and inconvenience both motorists and pedestrians. The drive is part of the civic body’s broader campaign to improve public safety, maintain cleanliness and ensure better road management in Mumbai’s congested areas.

A long awaited and good move. BMC and the Traffic Police should not depend only on public complaints. Instead there should be flying squads too to indentify dumped vehicles.
