The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday (13 July) a batch of petitions seeking an independent investigation into allegations of donation theft linked to the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya,
according to a LiveLaw report.
A bench comprising chief justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, justice Joymalya Bagchi and justice V Mohan will hear three writ petitions seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and other directions relating to the finances of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Theerth Kshetra Trust, which manages the Ayodhya temple.
One of the petitions has been filed by Narendra Kumar Goswami, appearing as petitioner-in-person. It seeks a CBI investigation into the alleged donation theft and an audit of the Trust's finances by the comptroller and auditor general (CAG).
Another petition, filed by Ajay Kumar Rai and Dinesh Kumar Yadav, also seeks a direction for a CBI probe.
The third petition has been filed by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)’s member of Parliament (MP) Sudhakar Singh. According to LiveLaw, Mr Singh has sought a Supreme Court-monitored CBI investigation along with a comprehensive forensic audit of the Trust's finances in view of the alleged scam.
The public interest litigation (PIL) also seeks directions to preserve all financial records, including physical documents, digital ledgers, unified payments interface (UPI) transaction logs and bank statements, to prevent any alleged tampering with evidence.
It further seeks an interim direction restraining the Trust from making major investments, entering into substantial contracts or taking significant financial decisions without the approval of a proposed court-monitored oversight committee until the investigation is completed.
The petition also seeks a comprehensive forensic audit of all donations, financial transactions and assets of the Trust by an independent agency. It has sought directions for the Trust to publish audited financial statements, donation records and details of fund utilisation on its official website, while safeguarding sensitive donor information.
In addition, the petitioner has sought directions requiring the Trust to place before the Supreme Court a complete statement of all donations and contributions received since its constitution. This includes cash donations, bank transfers, digital payments, foreign contributions, donations in kind, gold, silver and other valuables, along with details of their accounting, custody and utilisation.
According to LiveLaw, the Supreme Court had earlier declined requests for an urgent hearing during the partial court working period. Similar petitions seeking comparable relief are also pending before the Allahabad High Court.
Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Police have registered a first information report (FIR) following an inquiry by a special investigation team (SIT) constituted by the state government. Eight persons are currently in custody in connection with the case.
