Bharti Airtel Ltd (Airtel) has announced a strategic partnership with Elon Musk's SpaceX to bring Starlink's high-speed internet services to its customers in India. This marks the first agreement of its kind to be signed in the country, though it remains subject to SpaceX securing necessary authorisations to sell Starlink in India.

The collaboration aims to combine Airtel's expertise in the Indian telecom market with SpaceX's advanced satellite technology, offering seamless connectivity across the country. Gopal Vittal, managing director and vice chairman of Airtel, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Working with SpaceX to offer Starlink to Airtel customers in India is a significant milestone and further demonstrates our commitment to next-generation satellite connectivity. This collaboration enhances our ability to bring world-class high-speed broadband to even the most remote parts of India, ensuring that every individual, business, and community has reliable internet."

As part of the partnership, Airtel and SpaceX plan to offer Starlink equipment at Airtel's retail stores and provide services to business customers, schools, health centres and rural communities. The companies aim to leverage Airtel's extensive ground network infrastructure to expand and enhance connectivity, particularly in underserved areas.

Gwynne Shotwell, president and chief operating officer (CEO) of SpaceX, highlighted the transformative potential of the partnership. He says, "We are excited to work with Airtel and unlock the transformative impact Starlink can bring to the people of India. The team at Airtel has played a pivotal role in India's telecom story, so working with them to complement our direct offering makes great sense for our business."

By adding Starlink to its existing alliance with Eutelsat OneWeb, Airtel aims to offer comprehensive and seamless connectivity solutions to businesses and communities alike. The partnership is poised to enhance nationwide broadband coverage and address the connectivity gaps in rural and remote areas of India.
