News Broadcasters want digitisation of cable network from July
NBA, the body of private television news and current affairs broadcasters said digitization would provide significant transparency and enable the government to enhance its revenues
New Delhi: The News Broadcasters Association (NBA) on Wednesday urged the government to ensure digitisation of cable network is made effective from 1st July, and said the move will help the "crippled" industry, reports PTI.
The NBA board which met today lauded the government's move to usher in digitisation from 1st July next.
In a statement, the body of private television news and current affairs broadcasters said it will provide for significant transparency and enable the government to enhance its revenue by way of income tax, service tax and entertainment tax.
"Importantly, from the news broadcasters' view there is a significant ray of hope with the potential reduction of carriage and ban on placement fees, both of which have crippled the industry", it said.
Referring to speculations that the implementation date could be extended, NBA believed that the government would continue with its "determination and assurance" that the date will be adhered to.

Thanks, Mr Basu, for revitalising our sensory perception of the market. Yet, tomorrow the Friday will most probably see profit-taking sentiment sweeping down the market.
The so called sympathetic reactions as a result of what is happening outside in foreign quarters is temporary.
Our real growth can be only measured when we actually have some progress made in the country itself.
There is talk that Reliance is intentionally holding up gas/oil prouction and delaying so that it can realise better prices is gaining ground; I am not qualified to judge this, but the fact remains that, instead of Governments' various departments trying to show that they are more smart than the other is not getting us anywhere in terms of greater production. Whether it is Reliance or Cairn or OnGC or anybodyelse, we need to tell all these producers to increase the production, instead of the nation depending upon imports. Likewise, we need to tell the power generators, including NTPC, to ensure what they "produce" is NOT wasted for any reason, which I believe has happened because there were "no takers". In which case, why was it allowed to be produced in the first place?
Let's first set our house in order, and not be greatly influenced by Spain defaulting or Turkey leaving the European Common Market.
