This comes with a concerted push from PM Modi to invite NRIs and Indian origin foreign citizens to invest in India
At the inauguration of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas today in Gandhinagar, PM Modi pitched the latest measures to make travel and investments by Indians abroad easier.
“India is waiting for NRIs with open arms,” the PM said. This comes after the President signed into law the government's ordinance on changes to the Indian Citizen Act, 1955.
The provisions in the amendment made it easier for minors and family members of Indian citizens living abroad. Children, grand-children, spouses whose marriage has lasted over 2 years will now be eligible to apply for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards.
The amendment also provides for the merging of the prevalent Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card and the OCI card.
At the inauguration the Prime Minister said, “I welcome all of you and say that there are several opportunities waiting for you in India. Times have changed very quickly.”
He also pushed for the Ganga Rejuvenation push of the government and invited the audience's participation.
