Calcium Channel Blocker’s Link to Breast Cancer

Nifedipine, a calcium channel blocker, has been in use for nearly 30 years. Now is an opportune time for decisive side-effects studies of this medicine. Based on data from women who have been using this drug over a long time, researches could establish whether they have had significantly higher incidence of breast cancers. There are now many other potent calcium channel blockers and we need to assess if they are as potent as this one and how their side-effects stack up in comparison.

Drinking Processed Cow Milk Could Reduce Lifespan

Swedes are among of the highest consumers of dairy per capita in the world. Researchers looked at the lifestyles and food habits of Swedes, from 1987 until December 2010, and also their health status. Results were an eye-opener and contrary to conventional wisdom on the subject. Regular milk drinkers did not have less bone fractures or lesser incidence of osteoporosis. Those who drank large amounts of milk died at a relatively younger age.

The more milk women drank, the more fractures they had. This study also corroborated the conclusions of two earlier questionnaire-based studies on women.

Blood Tests for Ebola May Need an Urgent Re-look

It now turns out that some people who had been tagged as positive for Ebola by tests did not have Ebola at all. This is a real worry for scientists, casting doubts on the accuracy of the tests currently being used in the field, to detect and treat Ebola, This might create unnecessary worry and result in wasted resources to quarantine those who seem to show Ebola in only the tests and not otherwise. It means that scientists need to re-look the markers used to detect Ebola. With a deadly and infectious disease such as this, errors from epidemiologists and doctors may prove very costly as reports suggest that the virus may soon mutate into a deadlier form.

Influenza Vaccination Does Not Prevent the Disease

Although well known among vaccine sceptics, a recent report from the American Centre for Disease Control (cdc.gov.) confirms that the sceptics were right and the official position about ’flu vaccines was wrong. For the sake of doubting Thomases among the resident non-Indians RNIs), I quote the report below:

On February 10, 2014, the USS Ardent, a U.S. Navy minesweeper, was moored in San Diego, California, while conducting training. Over the course of 3 days, 25 of 102 crew members sought medical care because of influenza-like illness (ILI). Nasal swab specimens were collected from each patient, and initial rapid influenza testing indicated 16 cases of influenza A. Ultimately, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing conducted by the Naval Health Research Center determined that 20 specimens were influenza A, of which 18 were subtype H3N2. Two specimens could not be subtyped. The HA gene sequence of an outbreak isolate was 99% identical to strains circulating during the 2013–14 influenza season and antigenically similar to the H3N2 component of the 2013–14 influenza vaccine. At the time of the outbreak, 99% of the crew had received influenza vaccine. Through the duration of the outbreak, the minesweeper squadron medical officer collaborated with Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit Five, higher-level Navy authorities, and County of San Diego Public Health Services to implement the outbreak response, which included disseminating outbreak information to surrounding Navy units, disinfecting the ship, sending home infected crew members, identifying family members at high risk, and providing antiviral medications and guidance. No crew member had onset of symptoms >6 days after the first crew member became ill. This outbreak highlights the risk for an H3N2 influenza outbreak among vaccinated and otherwise healthy young persons.”
