Nokia Lumia 800: Why the 'noPhone' review draws ire only from Nokia and Microsoft employees?
December 19, 2011 03:39 PM | Bookmark and Share
Yogesh Sapkale

Last week we published a review of Nokia’s latest ‘Lumia 800’ based on technical specifications of the mobile. However to our surprise, it attracted number of comments, mostly abusive, from none other than Nokia and Microsoft employees and associates

Last Friday, I wrote an article about the newly launched Nokia Lumia 800. The article was aimed to educate and inform readers and buyers about this latest smartphone from Nokia so that they could make a smart decision. However, this review ruffled some feathers and we saw an orchestrated pile of comments. The common factor in all these comments was use of abusive language that explains the motive.

However, the  surprise came when I decided to check the origin of these comments. The first comments that appeared were posted by none other than the employees and associates of Nokia and Microsoft. Especially one commentator, Harish, who later realised his mistake of posting comment from his official IP address (from India) and changed it later, is the one who had written the maximum (nine so far) abusive posts. I wonder, if this is called good PR practice at Nokia and whether they believe that everything can be bought like the ad-extravaganza they created in newspapers and TV channels?

Here is what Harish says...

Name = harish
Email Id = harishnhce@gmail.com
Ip Address = 192.100.117.41

What an crap review!! it's one of the best phone available, iphone is so dumb compared to this.... Guess some one is paying you lumpsum, congrats..

The IP address ‘192.100.117.41’ belongs to Nokia Corp.

Same is the case with other commenter, Aditya Agrawal. While Mr Agrawal has refrained from using abusive word, he had tried hard to convince us that 512MB performs better compared with 1GB or more memory. Since this argument is from somebody from Microsoft, I am really missing my good-old Win98 that used to run on just 32MB RAM unlike the latest Win7 that requires 4GB RAM on the lower side. Hope, Mr Agrawal will tell those guys at Bellevue in Microsoft to make the next Win8 run on less memory so that it can perform better and we all can bring back our discarded systems into some use! Similarly, he should also try and convince the guys at Intel and AMD not to make any better processors as their old ones would perform better with Microsoft OSs. Here is the comment of Mr Agrawal and his IP address...

Name = Aditya Agrawal
Email Id = rushmax77@hotmail.com
Ip Address = 207.46.55.31

dude, gone are the times when actual consumers just use to care about the technical specificiations of mobiles. today, people want devices which are beauitful, fast and easy-to-use. for most of the consumers, it does not matter if the phone has 512mb or 1gb ram. if the 512mb performs better in real-life, that't the one customers are gonna prefer.

just a small advice, go to a store and use windows phone 7.5 for 10 mins, the last thing you will care is whether the phone has a single or a dual core.

The IP address 207.46.55.31 belongs to Microsoft Corp.

Coming back to the original article, I had clearly mentioned at the start of that article that the review was completely based on technical specifications. The only phone I found matching technical specification of Lumia 800 was from Samsung and hence was used there. Let me make it clear again that India is a very price sensitive market when it comes to spending hard earned money. This is the mistake many manufacturers, especially from the western countries, has made in India. Obviously they are still paying the price for this. Most Indians prefer to save money and then spend it rather than taking credit for a smartphone that may cost them a month’s salary. It is the same reason why iPhone 4S, which is available at Rs42,000, is still unable to see better sales in India.

Nokia, which first sensed this factor back in 2000, reduced handset prices in order to make it more affordable and was able to increase its market share phenomenally, until it faced stiff competition from China-made but locally branded handsets. While the world was embracing newer operating systems (OS) for mobile handsets, Nokia decided to stick with its age-old Symbian platform. Symbian is a good OS, but only for basic phones and could not compete with the likes of BlackBerry, Android and Apple’s iOS. This resulted in Nokia losing its market share across the globe, especially in smartphone category.

Just a few days ago, Exane BNP Paribas conducted a survey in the five European markets where the Lumia 800 has gone on sale. Out of the total 1,300 people surveyed from the five markets, around 456 said they were interested in buying a smartphone. “With only 2.2% of surveyed buyers firmly intending to purchase the Lumia 800, Nokia's first flagship Windows Phone is ... far behind the current blockbusters, Apple's iPhone 4S and Samsung's Galaxy S II,” analyst Alexander Peterc wrote in the report. Need I say more?

Strictly speaking on the pricing and technical specification terms, if somebody offers a SUV (sports utility vehicle) at a price of a mid-sized car, then over 95% people would prefer to buy the SUV. Don’t believe me? Go and ask any dealer of Mahindra & Mahindra and they will tell you the overwhelming response to their newly launched XUV500 that is attributed to its competitive price with other mid-size cars in the market.

Similarly, if for about Rs30,000 somebody is offering a mobile handset with better technical specifications (like dual-core processor, more memory, dual camera and larger screen) do you think anyone would buy Lumia 800? I doubt. Just to give more choices, for the same amount, you can buy, Samsung Galaxy SII, Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S, HTC Rhyme, HTC Sensation and even BlackBerry Torch 9810, that are much superior in technical specifications and features when compared with Lumia 800. As of today, Samsung Galaxy SII is available at around Rs27,200, which still is the top seller in this price range.

We are also clueless about the kind of ‘Kolaveri di’ (rage) generated by readers (?), especially from countries like Singapore, the US, UK and even Poland. We had traced back the origins of all the comments and would publish, if necessary, at a suitable time.

If its true that Microsoft & Nokia is doing this orchestrated pile of comments against an article who just expressed his opinion about a product, its just a shame on them & shows their lowest moral.

Lol. Honestly, Yogesh Sanale, who gave you your job? Posting another article in your defense based on the comments on the previous one is as juvenile a behaviour as it can get.

You are unfortunately not exposing Microsoft and Nokia here but making a display of your own intelligence and the values and the integrity or the lack of them of moneylife.in

Microsoft and Nokia are bigger than responding through the Comments section of Yogesh Sanale's review on http://www.moneylife.in. It's not as if Rajiv Makhni is sharing his review on NDTV.

a)You haven't used the phone

b)You are making a display of your joblessness and your insecurity by publishing the details of the commenters

c) For all your efforts, good luck with your reviews ahead. You might just want to float them on your own blog or something equipped with a statscounter gadget for tracking and analysing live traffic feed!

God, the author is a real moron!! He did not bother to actually test the phone and wrote a review...how sane is that?

Also, he has the gall to rant against people who do not agree with him. Posting the e-mail addresses of the people who posted negative comments about his review is really cheap!

God, what a creep !!

So let me get this straight: YOU posted a "review" of the Nokia Lumia 800 - a negative review - and did NOT even bother to try the device out? Dude, total FAIL from the get-go. THEN in a follow up "article" you rat out 2 people who call you out on your so-called review. Do I have that right? So much for any sort of integrity - what's the matter? Upset because they called you out? I have some advice for you - if you plan on reviewing a product - TRY the product out first so you have actual hands-on experience... then again that's what a real reviewer does.

Microsoft and Nokia employees have more right than you, Yogesh Sapkale, to post their opinions of the product because they have actually used it first hand. You have not.

You should be fired on the spot for not only posting publicly personal information, but poor journalism and lack of professionalism to take criticism.

Yogesh doesnt like to spend a penny more on a worthless item........(1)
Yogesh says the most imprtant things to compare are price and technical specification.........(2)
Yogesh says Samsing has better technical specifications than Nokia and cheaper too...........(3)
Nokia is priced very cheaply to Apple comparing technical specifications and pricing ..........(4)
But still Yogesh says Nokia can never come close to Apple..............(5)
Also Mango is sweeter than Apple..........(6)

From (1),(2),(3),(4),(5) and (6), we can conclude that:
a. Apples are produced in Jammu Kashmir
b. Yogesh is a happy and gay person

PS: Samsung fones are better because XUV500 got sold out in prelaunch.

lol.. looks like this guy has got campus placement straight from the nursery..!

he has actually published IP addresses of readers... hope they get a juicy lawsuit for it !

but its not his fault.. he just wont be able to write a review about it.. even after so many comments.. he will just look what is 'cheaper' to the naked eye.

he is not a power user.. but i think.. he is the perfect guy for comparing say a micromax and a videocon mobile.. he might outperfom in writing such reviews and generating comparative data.

i hope moneylife gets mature, gets a domain specific editor.. who can actually understand the essence of a mobile fone and how it can gel in with ur life.

now this is like a kid blogging his heart out.. unfortuantely on a portal with a supposed good name.

but as always.. any publicity is good publicity.. it will sure addup to its PR in google who is another blind guy..rating stuffs..!

Dont tell us about he, speak about yourself first, if you are lame person.
im a user of nokia N8..Yesterday i got a call from my priority dealer saying that nokia lumina 800 demo has been arrived at the store..The very first time i saw the fone it was awesome the display was so bright and with brilliant colour resolution..i went through all the features of the fone..i found these features were missing
1.No USB on the go
2.No direct music transfer via mass storage
3.No expandable memory, internal memory limits u to store upto 13gb
4.No HDMI output
5.No video calls and front facing camera..
i found many if the features missing on the fone compard to my n8..i intitially thought of selling my n8 and buy this lumina 800 but once i found these features to be missing i really got disappointed and dropped my idea.
i would rather go for lumina 710 since it costs less than 18k INR and worth buying even though it lacks the above all features

So I am not allowed to comment on any articles about Nokia or MSFT products, because I am working for one of those companies?

Abusive comments are not OK, I agree.

I believe that the press in bashing Nokia for no good reason. Apple has a great marketing and a nice looking product.

I choose the Lumia, because it is the better business phone. iPhone is a consumer phone and, from my perspective, totally overrated.

Try plugging an iPhone or Android into your complex IT infrastructure. What about security and application delivery?

Is it only about Ghz, Pixel and battery in a technical review?

It is very nice to create an impression, that Nokia and MSFT actually pay or requests these comments from the employees. Totally NOT true.....

I am a little confused.... just stumbled on this page and think its a great idea to expose these fakers who post seemingly independent comments.

Looks like the entire digital world is gamed - companies apparently hire bunches of goons to post on their behalf or abuse those who criticize their products. What a joke.

You talk about Kolaveri-di -- if you do a little research, that too will turn out to be a big internet hoax - manipulated to ensure hits and claims of going viral... its all a collaboration between sony and the times... what a bloody joke!!!

Why do you suspect black PR actions instantly? If it was on purpose any sane tech company would be able to figure out how to use a proxy server.

I am an ex-Nokia employee and one thing that is very true for Nokia is a culture of openness, where people are not afraid of expressing their own opinions given they do it as private people.

There are also plenty of fans of Nokia stuff inside the company. Certainly using abusive lingo is not a good idea even if you are a big fan, but that happens with people. So these may very well have been legitimate comments by people who do like Lumia and happen to work for Nokia.

P.S.
I am not fond of Lumia myself, very happy about my Nokia N9 though.

P.P.S.
I didn't comment about Microsoft as I don't really know their internal culture. I left Nokia pretty much on a day when Nokia decided to go for MSFT

Yogesh, your latest article is a bit unprofessional and makes you a look bit thin-skinned. I have never seen an author hunt down IP address and publishing names. The so-called abusive comments are hardly abusive. I think even you are smart enough to know that it was not an orchestrated attack by MS or Nokia. It seems that the major point that the 'abusers' were trying to get across is that WP7 provides a better experience with its specs than an Android device with better specs. If you are in fact value oriented you should appreciate that also. Time is money, what device is going to waste more of your time?

I was amused when i read yor original review article. My amusement turned to shock when i read the current one where you display the contact and ip details of an individual for all to see. Maybe your childish impulse to score brownie points overcame any other scruples you might have had. I thought for a website as esteemed as this privacy meant something. As for the your review i would like to present some points and this comes from a guy who just bought an Galaxy note a week ago.

1)Writing a review based just on technical specifications is just a stupid and idiotic idea. If specifications were the gold standard to measure a phone with, then most of the earlier Iphones and even the recent one would appear outdated at their time. Alas that is not the case.
2) Why would anybody need a Dualcore processor on their mobile when it works good enough with a single core one? Android for all the freedom of customization and features that it offers has that one drawback. It sometimes seems sluggish even on a Dual core with a gb ram to boot. Dual core on the latest Gingerbread is not a luxury , its a necessity. Have you tried an Android on a basic processor say HTC wildfire S? You would understand how the experience sucks. So while IOS or lets say a Windows phone 7 may work well with a 1Ghz processor or even lower try running Gingerbread on that specs. It will work but the experience is not ideal.
3)Have you really tried Windows Phone 7.5 aka Mango? I had the pleasure to try a Samsung omnia 7 gifted by a cousin abroad and let me tell you the ease with which it seamlessly integrates all the information is simply stunning. For something for which you would need 2 or 3 steps do in an Android you can do in one step in WP7.5. And how can you forget Facebook and twitter integration built deep into the OS and not as an added skin like we see in Android. I would love to try a Nokia WP7.5 in the near future as more devices come out and i think as a platform it seems promising.
As a tech writer you have a duty towards your readers to analyze each and every aspect of a phone including the OS without getting biased in any way. For the real geek is the one who keeps his mind open and does not succumb to fanboyism and rigid mindset.Hoping for something better from you in future than this half baked attempt.

Tracking user from comments is surely not an author's way.....u surely looks anti to WP7 or Nokia watever.....FYI i had a experiance for both phones u mentioned....i dont feel much difference in specs....but usuability, style and difference matters to me...as a user watching all phones surrounded by you in Andriod style desptops or dat iphone style icons really bored me..this tiles really excites me...if i had to buy a phone with 20k or 30k i will surely choose Lumiasss....may be the app market is very less...but who cares i need calls and internet working and may be space for music and videos...which looks perfect in these phones....

Good on you mate! You seem to have hit a chord with readers. Drawing comments isn't easy.

This smartphone business is getting tougher. Read this press release from last week >>> https://www.npd.com/wps/portal/npd/us/ne...

Numbers are in favour of only 2 players - Android & iOS - that is if we are to believe the NPD survey results. 2012 may be different but I wouldn't bet on it. After the _Brokering News_ movie, I am not prepared to believe any story on the face of it :-)

Time will tell. Let's see who the last man standing is.

Mr. Yogesh Sapkale

When you write a review from a technical specifications point of view you must also take into consideration how a certain phone performs with those "superior" specs.

You seem to a particularly fond of the Galaxy S 2, so I'll use that as an example in this case. Walk into any store and try a SGS2 and the first thing you will notice about that phone is the undeniable lag when you swipe away the lock screen. The SGS2 has specs that are unmatched yet the software with causes a lag.

So, tell me, how do the specs matter when the phone doesn't perform as expected. What you fail to mention is that Android as an OS requires these specs to perform optimally where as WP7 with lower specs can perform much better.

At the end of the day we as consumers do not really care about how high the specs are, we leave that to the geeks and nerds who are more interested in such things. We want performance, can you honestly tell me that the lumia 800 or 710 lags or performs poorly in anyway.

It is quite obvious that you were reviewing from a very biased point of view without really giving the fair chance, almost all the reviews online are positive. Even tech sites known for bias towards Apple and Android have reacted positively towards the Lumia 800.

I own a Samsung Galaxy S2, I'm not biased. But I do know what I'm talking about.

There is no credibility to your review, you are just a biased reviewer who would be better off writing his own personal blog.

Thanks Ryan for your comment. No, I am not fond of a particular brand or model. All I am concerned is spending a single penny more on worthless products. As anyone with basic knowlege of computers would tell you to always buy products that will stay in the run for at least next two years, without the need to upgrade. Galaxy SII just happens to be the one, with dual core, SD memory slot, 2MP front facing cam and loads of apps from Android Market.
Here is what Horace Dediu, founder of the mobile industry blog Asymco and Stefan Constantinescu, Senior Editor at industry blog IntoMobile have to say...
“They needed to come out with something that wows people,” he says. “Other Windows Phones on the market have larger or more advanced screens, they have front-facing cameras, which is something that Lumia 800 and 710 do not have.”
The bloggers say that Lumia phones have been getting good reviews from mobile phone analysts—even though, Constantinescu points out, those who give Lumia phones good marks are not necessarily in a hurry to buy one. It remains to be seen whether the series will attract enough consumers to make it a commercial success.
This is from Guardian, UK....
The Lumia 800 went on sale on 16 November, which will have limited its potential to appear in sales figures when ranged against Apple and Samsung – which have managed to pull far ahead of it in the smartphone UK market. More than half of UK mobile users own a smartphone, according to Ofcom data released last week. Apple's iPhone "significantly" outsold other brands seeking to tempt Christmas shoppers in the UK, while Nokia's new Lumia phone did not make the top 10 best-selling phones through operators in the four weeks to 9 December, according to the research company GfK.
Nokia's attempts to climb back to primacy with its Lumia 800 phone, the first running Microsoft's Windows Phone software, seem to have made a slow start. The GfK data, which records sales through operators – the only way the phone was sold – says it failed to make the top 10 in the four weeks. Despite a TV, poster and print advertising campaign rumoured to have cost more than £20m, the Lumia "sold only narrowly more than Nokia's more basic 'Touch and Type' phone", the FT reports.
My point is the one who has that something will last in the smartphone market. So far Apple and Samsung have shown that something in the form of iPhone and Galaxy S II. While Nokia in its second innings is going the Apple way by keeping high price, Samsung has got the price ration right, at least in India.

I don't think you got what Ryan has shared. As an analyst you should share your own point of view rather than shared what others have shared. What Ryan is asking you to do, is go and experience yourself on a store and then share your opinion but ... After so much written above .. you are still trying to defend yourself rather than taking actions on correcting it.

First and fore-most, I really didnt like your attitude as a reviewer to say crap is abusive. Its common in technical world. Second, publishing corporate names for some individuals is insanity. As you have right to write articles as you like on your chosen subject, they have right to criticize your article. You are one who need to apologize here if they get sacked for your stupidity. Also, I wonder what all information you capture when someone writes comments. This is real threat for privacy of an internet user.

Now coming back to the subject, I am with those folks from companies you are shouting about. I want to ask you what is your credibility to judge an OS and hardware as superior or not? They work on OS and pieces and surely know lot better. Their argument is sane too. Android and iOS need huge foot print to give graphics luxury (I dont use MS and dont know about them). So they need GHz range processors and GB of memory. The sheer weight of the graphics middleware and GPU's put cost on the hardware (silicon design, OS design and battery also) which adds up to the sum of the device. If someone tomorrow comes up with a device which can outperform iOS or Android at minimal hardware requirement, it is very welcome. The cost of the device also goes down.

I dont know what you tried reviewing in your previous article. But I am responding to this article. I use N8 and am happy with 680MHz and 256MB RAM. It performs well with no crap-ware installed, which Android with same hardware spec cannot. That is one OS designed for embedded computing. I am against Nokia using MS products(suicidal pact as I say), but why would they care for me? But dont do this kind of IP trace and publish. You know how to use tool doesnt mean you need to do it also.

Thanks Subash for your comments. Kindly read these para again to see my point....
I had clearly mentioned at the start of that article that the review was completely based on technical specifications. The only phone I found matching technical specification of Lumia 800 was from Samsung and hence was used there. Let me make it clear again that India is a very price sensitive market when it comes to spending hard earned money. This is the mistake many manufacturers, especially from the western countries, has made in India. Obviously they are still paying the price for this overlook.

@Yogesh Sapkale: While this article is blatantly biased against the Nokia 800 (who reviews a phone based purely on technical specifications??), you do make a few valid points.

However, that isn't the worst part of it.

A few classes in basic journalism and proper English sentence structure would be great for you, and fantastic for the reader. It would definitely result in a much better read.

Your article is cringe-worthy in this regard!

Feel free to trace my IP address :)

i totally agree with you.. specs and price wise, lumia is not a winner.. forget the hardware and dual/single core argument..the thing is, it doesn't have a front cam n also the screen is not super AMOLED plus.. the camera is 8MP but its not a match to the awesome one present in Galaxy S2. n by the way.. stop promoting nokia.. the fact is that they have some ground to cover before they are in a position to match the android revolution. and bottom line..samsung is no crap.. they are now the leaders in smartphone market..

You get your facts right. Lumia 800 has one the best screen out there. And dude its a patented clear back display meaning that it has very good performance in sunlight. Yes, the lack of a front camera is surprising but its not a big factor for everyone. Nothing against S2, its a great phone but Lumia is way better looking and stylish. Not everyone would like to have a black thin box in their hands. And what android revolution??? I have hardly seen a android phone that is good looking and beautiful to hold except for SE's Xperia series. Moreover not everyone would like to use a Android, its good that Nokia adopted windows. And everyone gsmarena, phonearena etc etc have given Lumia a positive review so u better check it out.

Hey niks, here is what GSMareana says about Lumia 800.....
If you're looking at the Lumia 800, then you've probably decided against an iPhone or an Android smartphone. You want in on Windows Phone and that's that - and the 800 is a good entry point. The OS has matured, the Marketplace has grown and Nokia demonstrates its know-how in phone design and services with it.
The Nokia Lumia 800 will sell well - it has already risen to the top spots in popularity for several carriers. It will boost Nokia's market shares and Windows Phone's shares too - but chances are it won't dethrone the leaders. The bigger question is, will it save Nokia from their burning platform?

Sir and are you allowed to give street details, their email address etc out? Is it a legal law where speech is not allowed for employees even if its correcting technical specs details? I would sue if you publish email details and location details.

Unbelievable. This article just reeks of bias. So you're comparing the phones based on specs? Didn't the iPhone taught anyone that specs doesn't mean **** if it doesn't perform as expected? Obviously the Lumia is just isn't for you then. Although it has specs that's what most specs-whores call mediocre, it performs far better than the Samsung Galaxy S II in most cases. I don't think I need to go on because the Lumias are already best sellers now.

I am not from Nokia or Microsoft but I completely agree with what those guys said.
The only reason Android and iOS phones have high proce3ssing power is because the OS needs them. if WP7 can do without them, why waste your money on that?
And even then, there are complaints that Android phones lack smoothness and crash at times which is never the case for a windows Phone.
My question is, why spend your money on high processing speed when you don't require it???
Instead go for a cool, stylish phone with an amazing interface which better manages to get your work done!!!
And for your kind information, even the Samsung Phones cost much more at launch!!!
Please don't try to track me because I am not from Nokia or Microsoft, but I am an Indian residing abroad. And those guys at Nokia and Microsoft had every right to comment since you insulted an absolutely amazing phone only based on specifications. Next time, please try a phone out before posting. I agree with Aditya!

Right now intomobile.com has an article which shows the excellent build quality on the Lumia 800, this site has a Google Pagerank of 6 and an Alexa rank of 9000 compared to your pagerank of 3 and Alexa rank of 40.000. Guess who is highest in the Google News. Moreover this is on US edition of Google News where Intomobile.com is a com domain and where you are a in domain. Sounds funny?

Check it out.
