Shares of steel, cement, retail and telecom equipment companies advanced 13%, 12%, 10% and 10%, respectively. Stocks of sugar companies rose 9%. Stocks of airlines companies declined 9%, while stocks of paint companies fell 4%. Stocks of building materials and refineries companies fell 1% each.
Combined food inflation stood at 9.79% for April 2014, up from 9.15% for March 2014. For rural and urban areas, food inflation was 10.42% and 8.29%, respectively in April 2014. Inflation in vegetable prices was higher at 17.50% in April compared to 17.05% in March 2014. Inflation in fruit prices was 21.73% in April 2014, while pulses were dearer by 5.05% year-on-year. Inflation for cereals stood at 9.67% and inflation for milk products was 11.42% in April compared to 9.61% and 11.02% in March 2014. The price rise of non-vegetarian items, such as eggs, meat and fish, was 9.41% in April compared to 9.47% in March 2014.
