Govt to probe alleged foreign funding of Aam Aadmi Party

Home Minister Shinde said such a probe takes time and indicated that the outcome of the investigation may not come before the Delhi Assembly polls scheduled for 4th December

The Indian government on Monday said that it has ordered a probe into alleged foreign funding of Aam Admi Party (AAP) after receiving several complaints on the issue.

Sushilkumar Shinde, the home minister, told reporters that, “Complaints have come to me. We are probing the matter. ...From where the funds are coming, from which country, what is the source etc. We are trying to find out all these”.

However, the Home Minister said such a probe takes time and indicated that the outcome of the investigation may not come before the Delhi Assembly polls scheduled for 4th December.

AAP, led by activist-turned-politician Arvind Kejriwal, is fighting the polls.

Shinde said the inquiry has been ordered only with regard to AAP as the complaints of alleged foreign funding were against the new party.

Replying to the probe into the alleged foreign funding, the AAP said, the party stands for honesty and clean politics and thus is ready for any kind of probe into our funds. "AAP welcomes union home minister's statement regarding prove into AAP funds. We feel that along with AAP, there should be a probe into funds of all political parties of the country and if corruption is found in any of them than their leaders should be sent to jail. Inquiry into funding of political parties should start from AAP and we have no problem with it," it said in a statement.

"However," AAP said, "if the union home minister doesn't order inquiry into funding of all political parties than it would be clear that BJP, Congress and all other political parties are securing funds for themselves through corruption."

On Sunday, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had questioned the source of funding of AAP, whose main election plank is to check corruption. AAP has been relentlessly attacking Dikshit and her government on the issue of corruption.

The new party has said it had collected around Rs19 crore till 8th November as donations from 63,000 people, including a host of non-resident Indians (NRIs).

It has claimed to have received donations ranging from Rs10 to several lakhs, from rickshawpullers to traders and industrialists to fight the polls and bring a graft-free administration.
