This is a rags-to-riches tale of Eddie Brown, an African American, who successfully overcame insurmountable odds and racial barriers, from an impoverished childhood and rose to become one of America’s pre-eminent asset managers.
The first half of the book has an assortment of characters who influenced Eddie Brown. He singles out his grandmother, the matriarch, who is described as being tough and nurturing at once, as the key influencer in his life. He also mentions a special character Lady B—a person unbeknownst, who fully subsidised Eddie’s college fees which, we learn later in the book, played a pivotal role in his success.
