Average Investment Period
What is the average time one should remain invested in mutual fund schemes for optimum profits?

MLF’s Reply:  Investments in equity mutual funds for a short period can be risky. We suggest a minimum period of five years for investments in equity schemes.

Investments in long-term debt schemes are susceptible to interest rate risk. Here, again, you should look at a minimum investment horizon of three years.

CCI Asks 20 Realtors To Respond to Unfair Trade Practices Report
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has asked 20 leading builders, including Tata Housing, K Raheja, Unitech, Ansal Properties and Purvankara, to respond to findings by its investigation arm that they engaged in unfair trade practices such as one-sided contracts with inadequate disclosure.

These builders did not disclose crucial information about the built-up area and often reserved the right to increase or decrease apartment sizes. The builders also charged high interest from apartment-owners for payments after due dates, but paid significantly lower rates if they delayed construction of the project.

Other practices uncovered by CCI include non-disclosure of applicable laws, rules and regulations with respect to the projects being developed besides restricting the rights of apartment allottees.

Builder To Pay Rs3 Lakh to Housing Society for Not Providing Conveyance Deed
The Additional Mumbai Suburban District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has ordered Ganesh Builders to pay Rs3.10 lakh compensation to a Bhandup (Mumbai) housing society for failing to provide the conveyance deed 15 years after the flat-owners established a cooperative housing society. Ganesh Builders will have to provide the document within six months. The Forum said the builder was guilty of deficiency in service.

The Forum observed that, despite an agreement with the flat buyers in 1982, the builder had failed to procure the document. The builder had not submitted any substantial arguments explaining the delay. All that the builder said was that the demands of the society were illegal. The Forum observed that the builder had failed to provide the necessary document, despite it being mandatory.

Members of the building filed a complaint on 10 October 2010, before the Forum. They said that furnishing of the deed was binding on the builder under the Maharashtra Ownership Flats Act.
